Tarn, Tun and the three ground troopers moved over to where the fighter craft was propped against Joo Nine. Tarn figured if it were Wub and the unnamed fighter pilot that yelled his name more than likely they would have exited Joo Nine at the same place they went up in. He did not think the two would jump down from the outer marker from the Arcevar Nover.
Sure enough he was right when saw the two of them climbing down from the fighter craft.
“What happen?” asked Tarn
“Sounds!” said the fighter pilot who was very excited.
“What kind of sounds?” asked Tun.
“Machine kind of sounds.” said Wub who was also as excited as the fighter pilot.
“Coming from where?” asked Tarn.
“It is coming from the inside of the outer marker.” replied Wub.
“Can you describe it?” asked Tarn
“It came from opening from the outer marker, it was a rod and on top of that rod was a box. When the box moved it made the sounds.” replied the fighter pilot.
“Did it try to injure you?” asked Tun.
Wub and the fighter pilot looked at one another, then they said together “No.”
Tun turned to the three ground troopers, pointed to the third ground trooper and asked him “What they described is that what you saw?”
“Only saw movement” replied the third ground trooper.
Tun pointed to the second ground trooper and asked “You does this describe what you saw?”
“Saw a box, no rod. It was gone when you and the seeker we are supposed to be guarding came to me.” replied the second ground trooper.
Tun then pointed to the first ground trooper and asked “Did you see this box?”
“No,” replied the first ground trooper “did not see this object.”
Tun was not satisfied with the first ground trooper response, Tarn could sense this and said “Tun do not be too hard on this ground trooper. He did not report any sounds from Joo Nine to us.”
“You are right Tarn, I had forgotten about that.” said Tun “Right now I am worried about these boxes, that they are a danger to us.”
“I do not think so.” said Tarn “It would seem that the Arcevar Nover are just as curious about us as we are curious about them.”
“And you think these boxes are not weapons?” asked Tun.
“They did not harm these two.” replied Tarn who then pointed to Wub and the fighter pilot.
“Why did you yell if this box did not try to injure you?” asked Tun to Wub and the fighter pilot.
Wub and the fighter pilot looked at one another, they did not have an answer to give to this starship crewmember. If Tarn had asked that question they would admit to being surprised by the box. Before they could speak they heard a familiar sound coming from the other side of the fighter craft.
“That is the sound I heard before.” said the fighter pilot.
“It is” said the second ground trooper.
“Then we should see this box. Maybe it would reveal things we have been seeking about the Arcevar Nover.” suggested Tarn.
The seven of them went around the fighter craft, the second ground trooper and the fighter pilot went first, followed by the third ground trooper, Tun and Tarn. The first ground trooper and Wub brought up the rear of the group.
Sure enough the box on top of the rod was there. Every time the box moved they could hear the sound. Tarn started to move toward the box. Tun touched Tarn and said to him.
“Are you not afraid of this thing, that it might harm you?”
“Afraid yes, any normal being is always afraid of the unknown, that is nature of things Tun.” replied Tarn
“Then why go?” asked Tun.
“Aside from making the unknown, known?” asked Tarn
“I did not think that was your main motivation on going out there.” replied Tun.
“It is not.” said Tarn “What is certain that some time in the future your Lord Zonar would like to execute me and he would take great pleasure in seeing this happening to me. If this thing is harmful to me and it kills me, no doubt Zonar will be denied this pleasure. If this makes him suffer then being killed by this device will be well worth it.” Tarn then turned and moved toward the device.
The fighter pilot followed Tarn and moved to his left. Wub then followed going on Tarn’s right. Tarn then stopped and said “You do not need to go with me.”
The fighter pilot then said “Seekers of knowledge do not travel alone when seeking out the unknown.”
“Really?” said Tarn
“Is not part of the teachings of the Tal-Ro?” asked the fighter pilot.
“It is not.” replied Tarn.
“Well it should be.” said Wub.
The fighter pilot and Tarn looked at Wub. Tarn then said “Let us continue then.”
Before they started to walk Tun then said “Tarn, wait, what if this device does not harm you?”
“Then we have nothing to fear from this device.” replied Tarn. Tarn, the fighter pilot and Wub started to walk toward the device.
The three ground troopers then joined the three moving toward the device. The second ground trooper went to the left of the fighter pilot, the other two went to the right of Wub. Tun then said the ground troopers “Why are you going?”
The second ground trooper replied “Need to guard the seeker.”
Tun then joined the six, he managed to be on the far right of this mismatched group, which now numbered seven, still as mismatched as before, but at least it had one each of the various followers of Zonar. They continued to move toward the box on the rod. As they moved toward it the box made no hostile action against the seven that approached it. From what Tun noticed the box seemed not to notice the seven that was approaching it.
As they got closer to it Wub noticed something about it and said “It seems to be retreating inside the outer marker.” Wub then broke the line and started to go ahead of the line.
“Wub wait, be careful” said Tarn.
The fighter pilot wondered who Wub was. He then noticed that the technician went ahead of the line. He then notices the box stopped retreating inward. It then started to come out and pointing toward the group of seven, which the remaining six caught to Wub.
“Now what?” asked Tun
“It seems to see us now.” replied Wub
The box on the rod looked at the group of seven. The box turned and pointed to each member of the seven.
“Do any of you feel anything?” asked Tarn
“No” said the second ground trooper.
“No” said the fighter pilot.
“I have not” said Tarn.
“Do not feel a thing.” said Wub.
“No” said the first ground trooper.
“No” said the third ground trooper.
“I do not feel any different,” said Tun “should I?”
“I have no idea, but I suppose that since we do not feel anything then this means that this device is not harmful to us.” replied Tarn.
“Then what is it doing?” asked the fighter pilot.
“It is looking at us, wondering who we are and why we have taking their outer marker on board our starship.” replied Tarn.
“Should we not say something to it” suggest Wub.
“Like?” asked the fighter pilot.
“Maybe ‘Greetings’, ‘Hello’, ‘How are you doing?’, ‘Good Day!’, ‘Good night!’, ‘Have a nice day’, ‘We come in peace!’, ‘Let us share a meal together’” said a gesturing Wub using his hand upward for every other greeting phrase that he had said. Everyone in the group then looked at Wub.
“What?” asked Wub “What I said?”
Tun replied “You said ‘We come in peace!’”
“And?” asked Wub.
“We came here to invade and conquer them in the name of Lord Zonar.” said Tun.
“So what we ‘rape and pillage’ them instead of ‘coming in peace’?” asked Wub
“Well more like ‘kill and pillage’ but that is standard procedure when we come to a new star system.” replied Tun
“So why don’t we do something new this time around, just to break the monotony,” said Wub he then pointed to the ground trooper next to him “they could use a break from fighting,” the ground trooper nodded in agreement “me, I could use a break in repairing the various things that get normally broken during an invasion.”
“Make a friend, instead of making an enemy” said Tun.
“That is best suggestion I have heard all day” said Wub. “Don’t you all agree?” Everyone expect Tun nodded in agreement with Wub.
“You know Lord Zonar is going to execute all of us for this ‘suggestion’.” said Tun.
“Regardless of what Lord Zonar thinks” said Tarn “someone needs to say something to this device, it seems to be moving and looking at us. I think it expects us to say something to it. Tun you say something to it.”
“Why me?” asked Tun
“Is not the starship crew member outranks the ground troopers, a technician and a fighter pilot?” asked Tarn
“It is but why not you?” asked Tun
“I am a prisoner, considered trash by the rest of the followers of Zonar. A much lower rank than the rest of you.” replied Tarn.
“I don’t know what to say to it.” said Tun.
“I can go.” suggested Wub.
“You?” asked Tun
“Why not.” replied Wub “No one else is willing to do it. I might as well do it and get it over with.”
Tun pondered over this and then said “Go ahead and do it but do not say ‘we come in peace’.”
