The scene that opens Chapter One was what was bumping around inside my head before NaNoWriMo last year. Nothing remarkable, and back then I figured it would take place somewhere in the middle of the story. Mostly because I decided to try (again) this year with only a couple of hours to go before the end of Day 1, I spit it out as the opening to the novel proper.
Of course, that makes an ending of sorts the beginning of the novel, which is kind of neat, except that there's a part of me that wishes we could know more about the last few months Sarah experienced before preparing to graduate.
By the by, I can't help but give names to all characters, even useless bit players, so I have no idea if you'll see anyone else mentioned once ever again (except, in this chapter, Melissa and Vincent are already smelling like they'll stick around). I hope throwing otherwise useless details like that around isn't too frustrating.
