Koa!

I am just a sucker for curly koa. I am fortunate enough to have some koa furniture, but I’m greedy - I always want more! The color, the fabulous grain - honestly, I don’t think there’s a prettier wood. I linger at the window of Martin & MacArthur (I have one piece of theirs, but I still regret the one that got away), King & Zelko, Nohea Gallery, Richard Dellera Studio … I know I’m leaving another place out.

I finally figured out a way to curb the lust to buy (all the more painful in that I can slake it only rarely): the last piece I bought I made such was the most gorgeous one I saw. It’s one of those large koa boxes, with perfectly matched grain and elegrant trim. I scoured the whole store and was compelled to buy this one - out of a hoarde of beauties - because it was the most stunning one in the place. Now before I buy, I picture my truly gorgeous piece, and if it doesn’t top that, or at least measure up … it’s much easier to put back. Why buy something not as good as what you already have? I think that’s going to be my shoping mantra from now on. Buy the best quality I can afford, and if something else doesn’t measure up … pass it by. This fits into my evolving theme of clutter-free living. Fewer (but choice) items are easier to live with….
