okay, so what’s up with the 5.4 earthquake? what, flossie isn’t bad enough?

Just a quick note to everyone who may still read this. As of this post, Hurricane Flossie has been downgraded to a category 3 hurricane (max. winds at 120 mph). We’re trying to prepare here in Hilo, which means securing the house, packing emergency kits, and securing important documents. Better to be safe than sorry, I always say.

The cat is totally oblivious.

Since we’re from Kaua’i, we know how to prepare for hurricanes, but it seems that people here in Hilo are convinced they have nothing to fear since “hurricanes never hit Hilo,” which could be true, but look at ‘Iniki. That hurricane wasn’t even supposed to hit Kaua’i, but it rolled right over that tiny island and caused millions in damage, so I’m not taking any chances.

The call to close down the university didn’t come until 4-ish today, which I thought was a little late, but oh well.

Right now, the path is showing that the hurricane will pass south of the Big Island, but have you seen how big that thing is on the doppler radar? Holy smokes. We’re sure to feel its effects.

As for our own situation, we’re more concerned about other people’s debris or telephone poles causing damage to our house from the high winds, as opposed to our house sustaining high winds and/or flooding.

Anyway, all is well here. I’ll update if I can. Peace

It’s been awhile since I last accessed my Hawai’i Stories account to post yet another “insightful” observation about things in my life. Hopefully you’re not expecting a smart entry that makes you go “hmm…” because I can tell you right now, this is not one of those entries that drastically changes your life.

I started running 4 months ago and boy, are my feet absolutely gross. I was inspecting my feet this afternoon and realized just how awful my feet are. Blister scars. New blisters. Mini corns. Discolored big toenails.

Bye-bye open-toed shoes. I’m doomed to roam the earth in covered shoes. Tennis shoes. Cowboy boots. Clogs. Anything but common Hawai’i footwear.

It’s not like I hadn’t noticed my feet were getting uglier and uglier as the days went on. I was in denial. How in the world will my once-beautiful and delicate feet ever recover?

I just recently got back into K-dramas since we now have the Korean channel here in Hilo. Thank God. People weren’t kidding when they said Hilo is 5 years behind. So true. Anyway, I’m so happy KBFD followed me here. 3 years later, yes, but still. Maybe some of my colleagues will get into it. Then we can talk about it around the water cooler.

we live in a new town. one different from our hometown. my husband, who lived there his whole life, likes our new town better than when we were living in the city. i, on the other hand, have been away from home for 19 years. our families still live there, but most of my life has been living in different towns in this state. we’ve moved to this town and the size reminds us of home, but we don’t have family here, which is both good and bad. good because we are relatively independent, but bad because we don’t really have a strong support network here. we don’t have children, so it’s not so bad, but it’s become a reason why we are still childless. we both grew up with lots of extended family and the thought of leaving children with complete strangers is mortifying. we think grandparents in a child’s upbringing are crucial to their social development and stability.
