I Dare You

Many years ago when I was four years old, I was dared to dip a Frito’s corn chip into the mud and eat it. Not knowing better, I accepted the dare and ate a mud-dipped Frito. I don’t know why I would remember such a thing after all these years. Perhaps it was the initial response of utter shock from my darer that caused me to remember. On the other hand, maybe what seared this event into my memory was the awful taste of a Frito dipped in mud.

I dare you to do at least one of the following this weekend.
I double-dog dare you!

* Fly a kite.
* Write a heartfelt letter.
* Drive with compassion.
* Take photographs of anything.
* Prepare a recipe that you’ve never used before.
* Play some old music and sing out loud.
* Buy yourself flowers.
* Go to a church you’ve never attended.
* Write down all your desires and put them in a wish jar.
* Draw a self-portrait, then post it on your refrigerator.
* Take a grocery bag and fill it with trash from your neighborhood.

If you accept a dare, let me know how it went.

    Ha! I’ve already done #6 and #7. I’m ahead of the game. BUT, I’ll get working on the rest ;) Have a great weekend, kane.

    I’m going to take 2 dares, possibly 3. I’ll take the jar of wishes, and writing the letter. The 3rd may be taking pictures. I’ll report back.

    You’re such a wonderful inspiration!

    *hugs*
    Karen

  4. Kane Says:

    Meg, haha. :) Write smaller.

    Jennifer, you’re always one step ahead. ;)

    Karen, sounds fun.
    I hope those wishes come true! :)

  7. Susan Says:

    What a sweet, warm post. I’ll have to think about it, but I’ve sure sang an old song out loud…lots of times! Gonna go do it again and embarass my daughter and her friends that are staying over again…heh heh.

    #4 done. Spent my aftenoon at chinatown taking b&w pictures of merchants and shoppers. Photographing people on the streets is tough. You get hit on, ignored, scorned and possibly everything else you can imagine. With that said, I’m looking forward to how my pictures turn out. =)

    I did like #2, “Write a heartfelt letter”.
    I wrote a grieving poem (in Scots) about the death of my dog and blogged it. Thankyou for your condolences, Kane.

    i have already done the sing out loud - to my glen campbell cd - so good for the soul to sing along. can i have a bonus point for singing out loud to my new cd while wearing earphones and walking along the beach? it was just on sunset & the ripples from the surf were washing over my feet it felt so good to be connected with the sea that i didn’t care that people might hear my warbling :)

    Aloha Kane, I was going to go back sleep but checkd out your site again. I took the DARE to do a Self-Portrait. It started simple then I just drew how I really felt. Something so simple had gone beyond any psychiatrist or social worker had ever gone in sessions with me. My picture was full with tears, showed a broken heart, and screaming in agony through a plain smile. The words in a box to the right - HELP! MARK,Come home. If my MAMA dies, I die too. WOW! Very powerful DARES! Thanks, I haven’t cried like this for such a long time! I’ve kept everything bottled-up.

  14. Kane Says:

    Annalise, that’s a cool coincidence!
    Have fun singing and enjoy your weekend.

    Susan, I imagine the teenage girls love to hear you sing. ;)

    Jenny, Chinatown is a great place to take photos; so much is happening all at once with people coming and going. I’m looking forward to seeing your photos.

    Stu, so sorry for your loss of your friend.

    Susan, you get points for singing to old and new songs. Plus bonus points just for admitting to singing to Glen Campbell. :)

    Egypt, great idea. I’ll look for your post.
    Have a great weekend!

    Lynn, that sounds like a powerful image.
    I hope it was a good cry and a release for you.

    Thanks to everyone for playing along and for the great comments!
    Have a fun weekend!

    I love this! I like how you included driving with compassion so I tried it this weekend. I also wrote a heartfelt letter and started taking photos of my garden. Thanks for the encouragement to try new things.

    Well I sang old songs very loud and took pictures of anything and everything. It was refreshing. Maybe next week I’ll try the new church.

  23. daisies Says:

    I did two of them and had so much fun that I am going take the week to go through your list though I’m staying away from mud doritos ;-)

    You rock! Oh, I drew a self-portrait of myself and its hanging on my fridge under my geek magnets and circle of photos and latest art creation of my son’s. And I bought myself beautiful tulips which grace my wooden kitchen table and so now my kitchen is full of warmth and light and coloured flowers of me. fun fun!

  24. Lynn Vasquez Says:

    Kane, I had to let you know that my daughter came over and saw my self-portrait. She asked me what was that all about and I told her…she hug me! She didn’t know I was hurting that BAD. She cried with me. Thanks again. Release…………….finally.

    Kane,

    I’m sure it doesn’t surprise you that I chose to write and shoot, dealing with some childhood stuff that wasn’t much fun to go through but had to be done so I could finally let it go. And you know what? Someone else, someone I’ve never met but have come to know like a brother, picked up the trail when I dropped it, took my hand and said, “Come on. It’s hard I know. I’ll go with you. You’re not alone.” And I developed an even stronger friendship than I ever thought possible, forged by the fires that we walked through together. It’s the purest form of love that I have ever experienced, and really blows my mind if I think about it too much.

  26. Marie Says:

    Kane, The opportunity draw a self portrait caught my attention. I used to draw (women’s faces and clothes specifically) as a hobby when I was younger but I haven’t in awhile. I’ll try this weekend.

    Thanks for the dare!

  27. Susan Says:

    I was going to type a letter and print it out, but thought of your challenge and wrote it out by hand to a life-long friend who’s in the hospital. His Mother told me it was well received.

    Looking over the list again, I see that I did use a recipe my Mother just sent to me for Ginger Chicken I’d never tried before. We had it 2 or 3 nights ago.

    Hope you’re having a great weekend. Gonna go look at some of your Flickr pics….!
