In Search of Ms Goodhands

I can’t seem to get loose. My leg muscles feel tight and stiff, and my arms have a heaviness to them. There is a tightness in the shoulders, and a familiar dull pain in the lower back.

Thankfully it’s not flu aches, just muscles voicing their objections to the occasional strain and contortion. A massage would certainly loosen the muscles and ease the pain. There was a time when I would occasionally treat myself to a massage, but nowadays a massage is somewhat of a luxury.

There was this woman that I used to go to for massages, an elderly Japanese lady with terrific hands. She had great technique and an understanding of applying just the right amount of pressure to ease the body and relax the mind. I always felt so relaxed and refreshed from her treatments. I don’t know what ever happened with that woman, but her hands are dearly missed.

A person with gifted hands is a like a person with a talent for cooking. It’s a skill that is often underrated, but always appreciated. As refreshing as a good massage can be, a bad massage can be a little frustrating. There was this girlfriend who was often enthusiastic about giving and receiving massages, but her hands were like two left feet. I never had the heart to tell her, so I endured the massages and tried to appreciate the effort.

The last massage I had wasn’t actually a massage at all. A new place had popped up close to home, so I decided to treat myself to a massage and try the place out. I paid for the typical half-hour session, but all that the woman did was swish her hands around on my back as if she were dusting furniture. She did this for about for five minutes and then she proposed sex for hire. I declined her suggestion, explaining that all I really wanted was a massage. Somehow that offended her, and before I knew it I was being told by Mamasan that I had hurt the woman’s feelings.

    Hi Kane,

I’ve got not much to say but just wanted to let you know I’ve read your recent stories and enjoyed you’re thoughts as always.

What a strange world we live in. Sometimes I feel pessimistic about it… People can do such terrible things to eachother, there must be some innate “wickedness” inside humans and I don’t think that will ever change, no matter how many good people there are, I often have the feeling the bad ones always win :-(
And now the world is grieving about a dead pope who was against/hostile/opposed to so many things… and by that the cause of death and unhappiness…. I don’t understand it… I’m just glad I don’t adhere to any religion because despite the fact that some people find hope in their faith, all religions bring a lot of bad things to the world… Conservatism, rigidness, intolerance…

    Sorry about this rant ;-)

ps. Just tell Mamasan it would hurt your feelings if you would have “sex for hire” with anyone ;-)

I usually look to local Tech Schools that have massage therapy training. Sessions are much cheaper and sometimes you actually find a good one!!

I personally don’t like massages because I think they hurt, but I will occasionally ask my mom for a massage when I have no other alternative to relieve the muscle tension. Sounds like an Asian massage parlor that one would find here in the Tenderloin district. Thanks for sharing another entertaining story about your life!

Too funny. And sad someone could be insulted over refusal of sex. My husband has these large, rough hands which are not condusive to the finesse of a good massage. It is indeed an art form.

I have the good fortune of being married to a trained deep tissue massage artist. Unfortunately, I hate massages (though a good foot rub is nice). Too bad I can’t share him with you ;)

I hope you got a refund for your “massage”!

Oh dearie me. That is a great ending to your tale. How offputting! I hope you find a well-suited masseuse (the real, bona fide professional massage-only type) again soon.

    Yipes!

Aw, Kane. Sorry to hear you’re hurting. This will sound dumb, but have you considered accupuncture? I never thought about it one way or another until I saw it truly help some horses I worked with.
Anyway, best wishes for you to feel better soon!

I suck at massages, I do try, but my hands aren’t strong enough. Having good hands is a gift, One of my girlfriends gave me a massage for Christmas as a gift, it was great!
