So there I was without internet access. I won’t say that I was experiencing withdrawal pains, but I was really missing the computer. I was literally sitting in the dark and bored out of my mind, and any underlying feelings of loneliness that I might have had were suddenly highlighted.

Over time my reliance on the computer has grown, but it wasn’t until this recent disconnect that I began to understand just how much I rely on it. Like so many others, I use the computer for so many different things. It has become my primary reference in gathering information, a creative outlet, a photo album, my source for news and music, a shopping tool, my communication of choice, and a number of other uses. It’s somewhat startling to think that one piece of technology can provide so much to my life, especially when it was only a handful of years ago when I first began using the computer.

The recent disconnect got me thinking about my life in the “olden days” before computers. These thoughts led me to thoughts about the younger generation, a generation that has always had computer access. I suppose there’s a small amount of prestige that comes with age that allows one to say I was around before something was invented, but mostly it’s just a reminder of how old one is getting and how the world continues to change. While I’m glad that I lived in a time before the internet and personal computers, I’m also glad to be reconnected and out of the darkness.

The computer is an interesting phenomenon. My life revolves around things that happen through the interenet. I don’t really use it as much as I did for social communication, but I rely on it everyday to help put food on my table and a roof over my head. I try to work very hard in case for some reason the internet dies, and I have to go back to working for someone else.

Yeah. Welcome back. There is definitely an empty void when the computer isn’t working. Also an empty void when you’re not around. 8]

it’s interesting, isn’t it, how ppl complain that the internet has made us too distanced from others, and yet it’s such a crutch! :p i agree w/ you though… at work they banned a lot of sites for virus purposes (or so they say), and that’s torture. i can’t imagine not having the internet at all!
    glad you’re back! :)

I’m SO happy you’re back too. It is amazing how much we rely on computers now. There are good and bad things about them, the good being things you mentioned but one bad thing is not connecting with people face to face as much. Being so busy, and email is about the only way to stay connected.

    *HUGS* Welcome back!

Welcome back! I was joking with my husband that perhaps we should set up a laptop on an exercise bike in such a way that we have to engage in some physical exercise every day to power up the computer in order to check email, read the news, or blog. :) In that way, our reliance upon computers might acquire some additional benefits!

when i was little, i used to think i’ll never never learn to use the computer, because i prefer the old ways and i thought i could just fine with the old and manual ways. i liked how the old ways had more of a personal touch to whatever you do.

well, now i am just as dependent on computer as anyone else.
