Serenade me

Aside from the fact that I logged in to find 238 spam comments, everything is going well for us. On Friday night, my son (in Hawaii) phoned to tell me how much he loves and misses us. He was at my youngest brother’s house celebrating my sister-in-law’s birthday. She’s 29 again!(for the umpteenth time). So he put her on the phone and I wished her a happy birthday. Then she put my other brother’s wife on the phone and we talked for a little while before she put my brother on the line. We talked about my aunt’s recent passing and how nice it was to see the cousins who live on the big island. Then he said my son was singing in the background to Darren Benitez singing El Burro Socarron. He wasn’t singing background, it was more of the ay yay yay thingie. My brother put the phone near my son so I could hear him. When my son came back on the line I asked if he was singing. He said, “Hello mom, you know I can’t sing.”
This is true. When he was a senior at Radford High School, his class had a talent contest. It was just for this one class so he thought he’d volunteer to go first. At the time he was carrying around this egg for another class and he had to make sure nothing happened to the egg because it was suppose to represent a baby. They were teaching the students how hard it can be to take care of a child. Anyway, back to the talent contest. He took his egg to the front of the class to accompany him and “they” sang Mama, by BoyzIIMen. No one else in the class went up to do a talent so he thought he had the contest in the bag. Then the teacher announced that he didn’t get first place. Instead, he came in second place. When I picked him up from school, he told me about the contest then he told me about coming in second place when he was the only contestant. I about peed my pants from laughing so much.
Back to the party. He put Darren Benitez on the phone and we talked as if we’d spoken before. He’s a very nice guy with lots of aloha. I asked when he was going to perform in Washington and he said he’d love to do a concert in Washington. I told him he needs to get a promoter who can work out some concert connections here because there are a lot of expats here who would love to attend. After we talked, he gave the phone back to my son and started singing Mother of the Sea which my son dedicated to me. My sister-in-law and her brother sang back up. Chicken skin.
After I listened to the song, my son told me again how much he misses me and wants me to visit. I explained that since Kamalani is in school, we can’t just hop on a plane to go visit him. Besides, I hate plane rides. So we said our god blesses and goodnights then hung up.
At nearly 2:00 a.m. yesterday morning, the phone rings. Ack! It’s my son again, he’s feeling a little more drunk than he did 3 hours prior. He says, “Hi mom, this song is for Dad” Then he puts the phone near Darren while he’s singing God Bless My Daddy. When the song is done, he comes back on the line and tells me how much he loves and misses us. I tell him we love and miss him too but we are trying to sleep because it’s nearly 2:00 AM!!!! He laughs and says, “OK, goodnight mom.”
Ahhhh. That is so touching! Chicken skin is right. I used to sing God Bless My Daddy/Mom @ Karaoke Bars because the Karaoke video version is one of a soldier. I dedicated it to my three kids. Everytime I sang it I cried…as well as everyone else in the place.
