Mama knows best

01.25.06

I rarely ever mention my mom and that’s because she’s just so undescribable. On Monday, Meg came to visit for a while and she had a message on her cell phone from my mom. She turned on the speakerphone so I could hear it. It was a warning about mad cow disease. My mom, God Bless Her, told Megan not to eat any beef in Washington because she was watching the news and there was a case of mad cow disease up here. She said she was worried because Meg moved out and she knows that Meg can’t cook so that could only mean Meg will be hitting the burger joints. Then she went on to say, ” …but pork is okay. Oh yeah, and buffalo is okay too, I think” The funny thing is that she was serious, about the buffalo.

Then lastnight I was talking to my cousin out in Boston and I told her about the message and she started cracking up. She told me my mom left a message on her cell phone too. Well, it wasn’t really a message, my mom sang “Do you know where my doggie went?” She said she let her mom listen to the message and when they returned my mom’s call, my mom said she was singing “How much is that doggie in the window” but by the time my cousin’s greeting had ended, she had forgotten the words so she made up her own words.

My mom is one of those with a huge heart but damn, you really need to look deeeeeeeeep down to see it. She always says what’s on her mind so you never need worry about where you stand with her. People usually perceive her as being standoffish. It’s funny because one of my friends here in Washington remembers my mom from years ago when she also lived in Nanakuli and she said my mom was the only woman she’s ever been afraid of. I know exactly what she meant because I was afraid of her too.

My kids tell me I’m like her at times, but I’m soooooo not like mom.

Wired News: Google Won’t Hand Over Files

The government wants a list of all requests entered into Google’s search engine during an unspecified single week — a breakdown that could conceivably span tens of millions of queries. In addition, it seeks 1 million randomly selected web addresses from various Google databases.

In court papers that the San Jose Mercury News reported on after seeing them Wednesday, the Bush administration depicts the information as vital in its effort to restore online child protection laws that have been struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Good Friends, Good Surprises

01.14.06

I don’t really like suprises unless it’s surprises like this.

My friend dropped it off while I was playing Mrs. Fixit at my brother’s apartment. She came over this morning to have a cup of coffee after dropping her grandson off at school. He goes to the same school as my grand daughter and I live very close to the school. She told me that she had something for me and that she forgot to bring it so she was gonna come back in the afternoon to drop it off. Surprises like this I can live with. Good friends like her I can live with too. By the way, it was every bit as delicious as it looks.

Breakfast couple

When I bought this syrup, I didn’t notice her apron was askew (all hamajang) until I had to make breakfast for Kamalani. She wanted to eat oatmeal with maple syrup. It was when I reached for the oatmeal box that I realized …

Raindrops keep fallin on my head

01.11.06

Seriously. It’s been raining here for 3 straight weeks and still more rain is in the forecast throughout the weekend.

Sara Jean Green of The Seattle Times wrote:

As of this morning, there have been 24 consecutive days of rain recorded at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, a streak that began Dec. 19. Between 12 a.m., Tuesday and 12 a.m. today, 0.94 inches had fallen, with an additional 0.27 inches falling between 12 a.m. and 8 a.m. today, said meteorologist Gary Schneider.

If the Weather Service’s forecast of at least seven more days of rain holds true and it keeps raining through the end of next week, the Seattle area would be well on its way to a record.
