Highland Games ‘06
Aug 13th, 2006 by Leimamo
Yesterday we spent the day at the 8th annual Whidbey Island Highland Games. Before we moved to Washington I went online to take a look at the Calendar of Events for our area. One of the events that I was interested in attending was this Highland Games. My husband and I watch the World’s Strongest Man competitions on t.v. and it seemed this would be as close to that sort of competition as it gets.
In addition to the athletic games, the event offered other things to experience the Scottish culture. There were folk singers, dancers, pipe and drum bands, food vendors and lots of men in kilts. In the opening ceremony, the clans marched in the Parade, holding their banners of their clan names and coat of arms which included their family tartans. In a way, it reminded me of how it is back home during Aloha week. A time when we’re all very proud of being Hawaiian.
We all had a wonderful time listening to the different bands play their bagpipes, it made some of us want to go home and have a Braveheart & Rob Roy movie-thon. We made friends with some of the Athletes as they explained some of the rules to us. Now that we know what to expect we can plan for next year’s game.

We get Highland Games here in Gresham, too. I went one year, and ho da fun!!! Glad u had a good time.
Do da guyz have BBD’s unda deya kilts? You neva look or dey neva flash you? LOL
Moki,
Apparently, they have these games all over the Northwest. They said this was a smaller version of what they have elsewhere. One of the Competitors was invited to the National competition held somewhere in California. I’d like to go to a Medieval Faire one of these days. It would be fun to dress up like a Lady-in-Waiting yeah?
Lika,
I nevah like make too obvious so I wen refrain from climbing ovah da fence and laying on the ground to sneek a peek undah da skirts. Ohhh, I should’ve wen tink like one man and glue one mirror on my slippah when I was tawkin to dem. Nevahmind, I go do dat next year. ~LOL~
