I recieved a phone call from my youngest son this morning from back home. He asked if I heard about the earthquake that hit Hawaii. Of course I hadn’t so I tuned into CNN where they had a live broadcast from KITV4. My son was in town when it happened and he had just arrived at home. He told me nothing was damaged at their home and I was relieved. About 5 minutes into our conversation, he mentioned that they had no power and he wanted me to check on the Seahawks v.s. Rams game. So I had to give him the play by play action for the last few minutes, which turned out to be a nail biter. In the end, Seahawks won and he was cheerful. When the game was over, he said he needed to go somewhere so hung up. I forgot to mention that he also told me that a store owner was opening packages of batteries and selling them individually for higher prices. His girlfriend also told me they increased the price of dog food. Where’s the aloha??
So after I hang up with my son, I dial my mom because she lives in Kailua-Kona and from the news reports, it was where the quake hit hardest. She told me that she was now worried about a tsunami hitting the island. I told her what I heard on the news; the quake was too deep underground so the chances of a tsunami being generated was very slim. She said she felt dizzy during the quake, like she was off balanced or something. But other than that, she was fine. No damages that she could see. While I was on the phone with her, the electricity came back on and she told me she was going to do laundry and cook something in case it went off again.
I hope everyone else’s ohana is well and safe back in the islands.
