For a long time I never paid attention to my blood pressure. I never thought I had reason to. Even though I knew both my parents had/have suffered from high blood pressure.

Back around 2000 me and my friend was cruising around WalMart. She stopped to take her blood pressure at the pharmacy section. After she did hers, she told me I should do mines. Ok. When she saw the numbers that came out on mines she told me I should go to the doctors like now. I said I’ll go tomorrow. I didn’t think it was such a big deal, it was WalMart. Oh, did I mention the numbers read: 180/101 or something in that range. Like I said it was Walmart. The machines aren’t really calibrated right. But its good gage.

So I go to the doctors the next day. It was lower the 180 but still high. I got all these tests run on me. I got my first EKG. I always thought there was more to it then just lying there. Everything was normal, its just that I have high blood pressure. With my family history it was sort of a sign.

The doctor said “you are young & healthy and I can give you pills BUT I think you should try and change it without first and see how it goes.” I totally concurred. I didn’t want no pills. So diet and exercise it was. Needless to say I did bring down my blood pressure. At the time the doctor said I had a “high normal” or maybe he meant I was “normally high” *L* either or yes, I’m that.

Fast foward to yesterday at the doctors office and my blood pressure was 122/80. I was shocked. Last time my blood pressure was that normal I had just come out of surgery and I was in LalaLand. But I rememeber looking at the monitors and thinking “well at least I don’t have high blood pressure.”

What a difference a bag of chips makes. I use to be (ok I still can be sometimes) the type that will eat the whole bag of cheetos. I’m not talking about the small snack size bag, I’m talking family size. *L* I still have bad eating habits, its just that now I’m AWARE that I have those bad habits. Aware that there is a price to pay for eating a whole bag of cheetos and other junk foods.

When it comes to food its all about moderation. Its about no supersizing or you will be super sized yourself. Fruits and vegtables, I gotta keep telling myself that. As oppose to ice cream and cake or pie, you know. I just love pie….cream pies. Or Custard pie! I’ve been known to eat one whole haupia cake when I go home. How decadent oink oink is that? My sista dem always ask me how come you buy 2 cakes? Duh, one for me one for you guys. LOL No more, I should only have HALF of one now. hehehehe

I think the past two weeks of being sick in bed has done wonders although I wasn’t thinking that while I was half dead in bed. My resting resulted in getting complimented for looking younger and my blood pressure is normal. Gotta be grateful for dat!*L*

I also found out recently that I have high blood pressure :-( Being in my early 30’s it was quite a surprise. I’m hoping to get it, and my weight, down by following the DASH eating plan. Good luck in keeping your’s low!

How about 216 over 160? My Doctor told me that I was lucky that I was already in Hospital for another reason and that getting bed rest wouldn’t be a problem ‘cos they wouldn’t be letting me out!

I can joke about now, even set up a web site, http://www.livingwithhighbloodpressure.net to try and share and help others but it certainly was a scary experience!
