So how did Friday the 13th become such an unlucky day?

Dossey, also a folklore historian and author of Holiday Folklore, Phobias and Fun, said fear of Friday the 13th is rooted in ancient, separate bad-luck associations with the number 13 and the day Friday. The two unlucky entities ultimately combined to make one super unlucky day.

Dossey traces the fear of 13 to a Norse myth about 12 gods having a dinner party at Valhalla, their heaven. In walked the uninvited 13th guest, the mischievous Loki. Once there, Loki arranged for Hoder, the blind god of darkness, to shoot Balder the Beautiful, the god of joy and gladness, with a mistletoe-tipped arrow.

“Balder died and the whole Earth got dark. The whole Earth mourned. It was a bad, unlucky day,” said Dossey. From that moment on, the number 13 has been considered ominous and foreboding.

Do you think Friday the 13th is bad luck? I don’t. Probably cause I was not raised with it. You know it wasn’t instilled in me as a child. My ohana did not “practice” and/or believe Friday the 13th as badluck. Friday’s meant weekend or payday. Nothing badluck about payday.

There’s a lot of things I believe are bad luck. I grew up around alot of, HALA BACHI! Hala dis dat or da ada. Some stuff use to piss me off as a child because my parents never told me why? They just said because you not suppose to. Thats how they were raised and thats how they raised me. But me was all dakine “Ha’come why?” And da answa was, “cause you going get lickings.” Always trumped by da belt or slippa, wotkine dat?

I’m trying to think if I raised my kids wit all da kine superstitions and it must be. I know I’ve always told dem you make fun of somebody bumby da same ting going happen to you. As kinda common sense stuff you know, treat peoples da way you like be treated.

Oh I know, their Oklahoma Grandma dem told da kids you not suppose play with the fire in da stove/fireplace. You know you get da fire poker dilly and push da coals around. I love doing dat. LOL If you do dat you going shishi da bed bumbye. Well dey neva say shishi I say shishi.

But I never thought of the number 13 as bad luck. But you know 1 plus tree(3) equals 4 and isn’t da numba 4 in Chinese badluck cause it sounds like da word death or something la dat. I fo’get.

My thought is I woke up dis morning alive and well cannot be bad luck cause I’m alive thats a blessing in itself, now if I was makidiedead as one ada story. I think we all have our own superstitions. *L*
