I am my own worst critic. Does that not sound like a semi-serious lack of self confidence issue or plain insecurity? Everyone is a critic, like everyone has an opinion. Good, bad or indifferent…..its based on ones experience or the lack of.

This is the first time I’ve seen a video me dancing hula by myself. I’ve seen ones that included me & others. Still I would know exactly where my boo-boos are but no feel all that bad cause people had others to look at. LOL
When I make a boo-boo in hula its usually:
a) The lack of concentration - my mind wonders, unfocused
b) I thinking too hard about it, afraid I’m going to make a mistake so of course selffull filling prophesy - I make a mistake - not trusting myself
c) My timing is off/the footwork is off beccause of - see a -
d) My hands are off - going too fast or too slow because - see a & c (lol)
e) All of the above - obviously needs more practice, practice practice
Basically everythings related yeah.
When I first was shown the video (an hour or so afta da performance); my first reaciton was “look at my hands” “I’m going to fast” “omg good cova”. The 2nd time I saw it I noticed da “good cova” and I rememba the reason I looked down to da left was cause I was laughing to myself thinking at least there’s no one to compare it to next to me. LOL

When I saw the videon online - I thought, da commercial lied. What happens is LasVegas, ends up on youtube.com. LOL I’m also reminded of all the things I ate that day. Befo’ da dinna, I got there a little early, sooo I got me a cup of macadamian nut ice cream. Emmmm. Wot an apetizer. Then before I danced there was a buffet, 2 rounds worth the shortribs was most ono. With the buffet had plenny haupia for dessert. Plus I had some ono kulolo. In fact I think my hands was still lilobit sticky from dat. hehehehe
Doing a solo for me is safe because I have nobody but myself to blame. *L* For me dancing dat solo was not dat big a deal because I knew I had practiced. Then afta da dance I was like, I should practice more. I suppose I was depending on muscle memory. I’ve heard of solo-ist who never dance a song the same way, each time they dance its different.
I think I understand that now. Its about the whole setting, time, place and crowd. Its the chemistry of the moment yeah. Rarely are moments the same. Its the “frame of mind” of the dancer. What dey ate dat day….
I watch me dancing and I think, now do you understand why you need to go to the gym?

Well done hula is…. from the heart. That is what I am reminded of whenever I watch a solo dancer perform. It is either, ‘moving’, or it is ‘tired’. Of course being born and raised in Hawaii I’ve had my share of watching hula. Even participated as a keiki dancer, but seldom do I feel the heart of a dancer. However, there are those rare times, and wouldn’t you know it happens at the most darnest places, away from the lime light and glitter of the super stage… but recently, I was honored to watch a single dancer on a humble stage dance one of the most awesome dance I’ve even witnessed in all my ‘Hawaiian’ life-style years.
Mahalo nui loa for the hula-blessing you gave to me that evening at the Aloha Gathering in Vegas. I was touched and teary-eyed by the end of your performance.
Eh, now you can tell people you performed VEGAS!!!
Well, I for one would love to have you dance for us again! Hana hou 2008? We go!!!
