So like I said I made my own Ipu Heke. It was a hula class project and great learning experience. I wonda da seeds would grow for me.

Anyways my ipu heke is short, brown and round. Oh kinda like da owna & maker. Kinda like, she says? LOL I used Plantation Walnut Wood Sheen to make’um shiny pretty. I wanted it on the dark side so I wood sheened it like 3 days in a row. Probably just cause I could. I had neva done “word working” befoe and I really enjoyed making my own implement. Although I tink I need one sawing & used da drill 101 class, still yet. hehehe

Us had one practice wit plenny peoples 30 - 40 maybe, something like dat. Us had to practice dis one song. Liliu’e. Basic pa’i, ho’opaa stuff. People say dat but for me I find it hard to look at a person dancing while I’m “trying” to say da words & do da right beat. Its cool learning it and all but I so distracted by anything dat moves. Maybe I need blinders like da horsey kine.

At practice we did it ova and ova and respectfully so, as da only way it registers with me; if at all. We had a break and dis one Unco came ova to me and said “you made dis?” (my ipu heke) I said “yeah” and I was tinking “ahshoots wotdid I do or not do?” Unco is known to be on da crotchety side sometimes. I was ready to get scolding o’something. So den he said “let me see.” So I gave him my ipu heke. He did some pa’i on’um, look inside, outside, turn’um all ova la dat. Den he gave’um back to me. “Get one good tone, good job.” I tell him “low yeah? YOU can hear’um?” He look at me like funny kine, “yeah I can hear’um.” K~Unco was way across inda front and I was way in da middle. But he does have an ear for music I know dat. But to think he knew was me playing BASS I was kinda surprised. Cause like I prolly wouldn’t been able to tell from far away was me da one. LOL

I still haven’t gotten a comfortable grip on my ipu heke. The neck of da ipu is way bigga den my hand and I gotta wrap the rope a certain way to make sure da ipu doesn’t slip outta my hand. I know da exact area I gotta hit, well I no have to but its “da spot” dats right. I can’t do da finga roll kine slap. Only da basic flathand kine. I was trying to learn da roll da fingas; I tinking so hud how fo’do da fingas I stay all wrong wit da beat. Neva mine. I do babystyle, I’m good. *L*

Now my issue is memorizing the UKK UKK. Also know as u(oo) (k)tay (k)tays. Da k-s is da slap da U, da down beat. I’m good looking at da paypah. *L* duh no pose to have paypah.

My camera is OOC. Out of commission. Junk yeah. I so want to take a picture of it and post it. Teacha said us should name our ipu heke. Hmmmm So in class us was talking talking and you know how everybody talking about different things at da same time. Well some people was talking about dis and us was talking about dat. So me & somebody else was talking about costoming and da oddas was talking ipu heke-ing. So somebody was saying something about “white kekepa/blue kihei” - which is wot us ‘pose to use. Anda ada peoples was talking about names. Dey was asking me about da ipu’s name? An I was tawking about wot us wearing. And da conversation turned into da question “Your ipu heke’s name is Kihei?” I looked at dem cluelessly and said “It is now.” *L*
