Money makes the world go 'round
That's right folks, the new counterfeit $20 made it's debut . . . CNN has an article in today's Money section here. That was quick, wasn't it?

Posted by Leimamo at October 29, 2003 07:34 AM*sigh* and I haven't seen the new real $20 bill yet.
Me, neither, Helen. Wouldn't even care if it was a fake ... if it was good enough to fool Foodland.
I have! Used 'em a few times, too. A couple of cashiers had to do a double take.
Though the appearance of counterfeits is noteworthy, I think the article does a good job of explaining why it might not be a huge deal. One, people could conceivably be trying to pass crayon-colored, hand-drawn bills to take advantage of the simple fact that the $20 bill changed - merchants are less familiar with the new design, and might accept a reasonable facsimily just because it's different. Two, the fact that the forgeries were detected at all is not a small detail.
As the article noted, "sophisticated copies" (i.e. unable to reproduce most of the new security features) not "high-tech notes." One would hope a full-scale counterfeiting operation to reproduce the new design faithfully would take a heap more work now than it did a few years ago.
