Don't Flash Your Lights!
Anyone else hear about this? I got this memo at work saying that if you are driving after dark and see a car without their lights on, Don't Flash Your Lights! There is a new gang initiation going on that requires the new member to drive around at night without his lights on until someone flashes their lights at him or makes some other action to signal them. The new member is now required to chase after and shoot at or into the other car. This Is Not A Joke!
It kind of scared me because most people I know do flash their lights at people who drive without them. When walking down the street at night Lisa and I would always yell "Lights" if someone was driving by without them. What is the world coming to where you can't even be a good samaritan anymore? I don't know how serious this is but Managers have been sending this notice to all the stores and I've been sharing it with all my regular customers.
Everyone out there, Please Be Careful.

I think I heard that one about 15-20 years ago. Another urban legend making the rounds again.

Although I'm a big fan of conspiracy, I'm going to have to correct you on this one James. It is an Urban Legend (see article for more)
We all thank you for your concern :)

The fact that this was distributed in hardcopy at a place of business is unusual. Next thing you know, you'll be warned about chemicals in your shampoo that cause cancer! (That's a favorite urban legend too.)
Since e-mail is the most common way these things are distributed today, you should take a moment before you pass anything along any further to check out Snopes (here's their headlight entry) or other hoax and urban legend sites (even antivirus companies track them).

Yeah... At work, I received the Bill Gates will give you money chain letter. I pulled up two sources explaining it's fake and sent it to my friend. She still sends those Good messages that give you good luck only if you send it out to other people. Like, ARGH.
"Everytime you send R-Lan those stupid emails, god kills a domokun (or kitten, your preference)."

Hmm. Sorry about the False Alarm. I'm usually not this gullible. It seemed believable especially since the memo named a police officer with the D.A.R.E. program as the source. I guess even the Honolulu Police are subject to falling for an urban legend which is actually even more scarry than the legend itself.

No prob, James! We got a similar notice/warning at my workplace as well. (Oddly enough, we work very closely with law enforcement.) It's that DARE part that makes it seem legit I guess. I would have thought that if anything like this really happened, it would have surely been front page news here in Hilo. :)

Anyway to see the memo on line? Now I'm curious about the DARE logo being on it...I find that more interesting than the warning, since like mostly everybody else I heard about it in the late 80's to early 90's...but it was involving the gangs in Miami and how they'd shoot anyone who flashed their lights at them. At least that's what I remember.

I had a copy laying around here somewhere but I think I threw it out after being told it was just an urban legend. I can probably get another copy from work, although there was not an actual DARE logo on it. It just said that an officer from the DARE program was the source for the information. The memo came from a Zippy's manager at Ala Moana.
