Helloooo and welcome to the new Internet friends of the Meimei! You must link the Meimei, you must blogroll the Meimei...
Erm. Uh, yeah. Today marks my first post as a Hawaii Stories community member. This means that I am formally introducing Domesticity to a whole new audience.
MORE...I just finished and had developed a roll of film that had been in the camera (Canon A-1; I know I'm an old fuddy-duddy, thanks) for at least a year. Lo and behold, there were four pix from a Hawai'i Stories gathering at Ala Moana Beach Park on the roll. I've added them to the Hawai'i Stories Gallery (Steve), but a couple of them need captions. For that, we need identities. So take a look and see if you recognize yourself! If so, say so in the comments.
Posted by Linkmeister at 01:50 PMIt's almost been ten months since our last get together, and my, how things have changed! Our `ohana grew by leaps and bounds with the launch of sister site HawaiiThreads, and here at HawaiiStories we've said a few sad farewells but yet welcomed several new and wonderful storytellers into the fold. The time has most certainly come to log off and get out, if only for a moment, and catch up and eat up face to face.
Please join us on Saturday, April 2 for a casual, family-friendly pot luck gathering of great people who are even cooler in-person than they are online.
Okay, the election is for better or worse history. So it seems a bit silly to still have the HawaiiStories Survey asking you about your vote. Whether it's Coke v. Pepsi, Aloha v. Hawaiian, or something more serious, let's have some suggestions for future questions for this oft-forgotten widget.
Posted by Prophet Zarquon at 02:39 PMCan it be? Has it been over a year before our last full-blown picnic? (Though we did have a small meetup in December.) Well, we've got to set things right! Our own Beth needs a proper sendoff, after all.
Let's get together on Saturday, July 31, say, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. What do you think?
MORE...What has HawaiiStories done for you lately? What do you love, and what needs work? Are things as they should be? Do we need more fresh faces? Do we need a new direction? While our family continues to grow, things are sometimes slow. And with some of the talkstory spirit spreading to sister site HawaiiThreads.com, it can't hurt to ask, "What's next?"
MORE...Has anyone in here tried Ad-Aware from Lavasoft? I just downloaded it and ran a scan of my two hard drives; it found about 400 "objects," but many of them look like cookies. I'm wondering if the software is smart enough to understand what a legitimate cookie is and what is not.
Anyone know?
Posted by Linkmeister at 10:59 PMJust in case a bunch of old entries got hit with a new wave of comment spam today (my blog got hit with eight overnight), I just updated our master list of the blacklist file this morning.
I thought y'all should know.
Posted by Linkmeister at 08:01 AMI know this got mentioned in another thread, but to this Petter Hegre or Porrarkivet or whatever you call yourself these days.
MORE...Sorry, no swanky new design to show off, but the good news is, HawaiiStories is running again! After the Great Crash of 2003 it better be the only crash in 2003 we've moved HawaiiStories to a more stable MySQL backend, restored all 400+ posts, and nearly all of a whopping 4,200+ comments. (We did lose a few dozen, however.) Despite all the insanity, hopefully it'll feel like nothing's changed. For better or worse.
Thanks for your patience. Now, get back in the talkstory groove! After all, it's been a blog-worthy week across the globe.
MORE...As mentioned on Donna's excellent life blog, KHON's Kirk Matthews is planning a short feature on local weblogs and our humble HawaiiStories community. Perhaps airing on tonight's 5 p.m. show, he's at least talked to Donna and I. I shared with Kirk some background on blogging in general, and spoke about the way locals here and away can connect via the web. Kirk also got a brief tour of our site, as well as the sites of many of our members. Will we see your blog on TV?
MORE...School's out, summer's officially here, sounds like the time is right for another local-style "Blogger BBQ"! No doubt there's been lots to catch up on since we last got together, and as always, we've also had new members join our 'ohana in that time as well. I don't want to waste a single sunny day... let's pick where and when and start plotting the menu already!
MORE...When an `ohana blogs on the web, and lots of people read it, does it make a sound? It might now, with the new HawaiiStories Media library! The idea has been around a while, but only in my recent flu medicine-induced haze was I finally able to install some software, run some tests, and even research some attorney repellant (in the form of "fair use" fine print). It's "HawaiiStories Radio," KHSR if you like, with a geekly twist.
So who wants to play?
MORE...The trouble with film is (long pause)...using all the pictures on the roll! Photos from the original picnic at Magic Island are now in my album in the gallery.
Posted by Linkmeister at 10:15 AMHad a lot to eat at the picnic this afternoon. I was so stuffed that I didn't eat dinner today (well I did drink some water for dinner).
MORE...How time flies! February brings our next picnic. At this point, it looks like our place and time are set: the afternoon of Sunday, Feb. 16 at Magic Island (at Ala Moana Beach Park). So let's get a handle on who's coming, with what, and exactly how much geeking out (and kid talk) we're going to see!
MORE...Okay, who's up for another bloggers' picnic? Our last two gatherings were held May 18 and August 18... so we're overdue! And since then, we've had a number of escribitionists join our `ohana all the more reason to meet up, chat, and snack! To get the ball rolling... how's Sunday, February 16 for everyone?
MORE...Pardon the pixel dust as I finally get around to adding a few more long-talked-about bells and whistles to our little talkstory spot on the web. Now in development, HawaiiStories Fiction, HawaiiStories Gallery, and HawaiiStories Survey!
MORE...Dang, haven't been sorrier to see an online journal vanish since the disappearance of Ophelia and Jay T.
Maybe Stella will discover she's so addicted to it, she'll reconsider. :)
Posted by Albert at 09:13 AMFrom ABC News' The Note: "You thought New Jersey was complicated — Roll Call 's Pershing gets into the complexities of the prospect of not one but two special elections, in addition to the November general election, to completely replace the late Rep. Patsy Mink (D). The time difference tends to quash interest in Hawaii politics, but this fracas is worth paying attention to." LINK
Gee, and I thought it was because we were so solidly Democratic.
Posted by Linkmeister at 08:23 AMOur little 'ohana was recently mentioned in a list of regional blogs on MSNBC. Welcome to all MSNBC readers!
Posted by Vivi at 08:20 AMCheck it out. My interview with the San Francisco Chronicle
Posted by Haken at 10:56 AMOur friend and occasional commenter Honukai is apparently having her baby this afternoon; the kid's no respecter of the BYU-UH game tradition, it seems. I know no more about it than what the Bunny has posted, so don't ask me for details; just wish her success and a speedy recovery.
Posted by Linkmeister at 02:37 PM"But the speed with which an idea in your head reaches thousands of other people's eyes has another deflating effect, this time in reverse: It ensures that you will occasionally blurt out things that are offensive, dumb, brilliant, or in tune with the way people actually think and speak in private. That means bloggers put themselves out there in far more ballsy fashion than many officially sanctioned pundits do, and they make fools of themselves more often, too." Andrew Sullivan
ain't it the truth ... :)
Posted by Albert at 08:58 AMI just realized how many new buttons are over there on the left sidebar, and then I looked at the "profiles" pages. Yo, new folks! Put something together and send it off to the web-boss, please? Hard for keep track!
Thanks, yeah?
Posted by Linkmeister at 03:06 PMFor those of us who can't make it there phyiscally and are waiting on-line for photos of the event, I figured it would be nice to start a new thread here and invite comments from the rest of us to cheer them on!
MORE...Apologies to Lee Cataluna, but... we somebody! Burt Lum, weekly tech writer for The Honolulu Advertiser, featured our little talkstory spot in this week's "Byte Marks" column.
So, hello world! Make yourself at home!
Posted by Scarlett at 08:41 PMI am just wondering but why is it that when I make a new entry here and then people comment to it I also get a copy of those comments via email?
Posted by Helen at 08:15 PMHawaiiStories is barely four months old, and has continued to tap the talkstory tendencies of island-loving techies. We've linked more than a dozen kama`aina (and kama`aina-at-heart) escribitionists, and discussed hundreds of topics. We've also been able to provide a home to a few wonderful writers.
But, I've made no secret of wanting to go beyond the blog, as I know with the `ohana we've built the potential is there for all sorts of wonderful things. So. What's next for our little green hypertext hut?
MORE...Time's flying fast, which means that it's about time we discussed having another Hawaii Stories picnic/hui. We had so much fun at the first one that we thought it would be good to have another one - that is, if we can find another date. :)
MORE...I just want everyone to know that I've been having problems with Angelfire, which is currently hosting my online journal. Part of the reason stems from the fact that the Angelfire folks are currently dialing down the disk space allotted to my site from 50 MB to 25 MB; while the rest of my site are currently accessible, virtually all of my journal entries are unable to load properly - the background shows up, but the text does not. And I've also upgraded my web hosting service from free to paid ($4.95/mo) so that could be the bug.
If anyone else is having this technical problem, please do let me know.
Edited 07/15/2002: As soon as I had this complaint up, I went back to my site and found it up and running - and not only that, I don't have pop-up ads any more!
Posted by Stella at 10:35 AMHi,
Just signed up to this web site. This is a test post that was done under the influence of KFC Popcorn Chicken and some fruit punch.
Just in off the wire (courtest of IMR-L):
OZAWA BABY BORN, MOTHER RESTING
HONOLULU -- Add one more to the Ozawa clan.
At 9:23 AM, Jennifer Ozawa gave birth to a baby boy at the Kapiolani Women's and Children's Center in Honolulu. Ryan, Jennifer's husband, said that she is sleeping after giving birth via ceasarian section. She was not available for comment at press time.
"The baby is seven pounds five ounces and nineteen and a half inches long," Ozawa said. "He looks like what Katie looked like when she was born -- he has lots of hair."
MORE...Unable to sleep, I ended up tinkering all night and set up a little chat room here at HawaiiStories. While the blog reigns supreme, a fun spot to simply shoot the breeze couldn't hurt, right?
That is, if there's someone around to shoot the breeze with.
MORE...You all are probably having fun in the sun right now down at Magic Island, sigh. Currently, NYC is rainy, dreary and cold. Let me know how the Hawai`i Stories picnic went: who showed up and most importantly, what was there to EAT?!
Posted by Sun at 10:51 AMI knew it was going to happen sooner or later, the link to my weblog is no longer available on my mainpage. This is because, as far as I know, I have the only images on the internet for Joss Whedon's upcoming Sci-Fi series, Firefly.
I guess it's a scoop and my site is going to get pounded pretty hard once word gets around. I don't want to get into some sort of legal fight with FOX (maybe they sent the stuff to me, who knows) so it's best that they not know who I am.
If you care to know, go to my site if you wanna see the images.
Posted by Haken at 05:20 PMI nominate that the Hawaiistories.com ohana throw a shindig with food and fun at the beach. A Blogger BBQ starring us! I think it'd be a great way to meet everyone! Who else thinks this is a great idea?
Posted by at 04:29 AMIt's so quiet here that you can hear two gnats "k.i.s.s.i.n.g." Oh, yeah, baby.
Posted by Haken at 05:04 PMI just discovered something that you all should be aware of. If you're syndicating Hawaii Stories, and the Hawaii Stories site is down, or there's a problem with your site communicating with it, your own site might get messed up.
My solution is if my site doesn't get a response from Hawaii Stories in a couple of seconds, I'll display the last good syndicated listing. Seems to work.
Posted by Haken at 12:52 PMOkay, so the online edition doesn't have it yet, but if you pick up this week's edition of Honolulu Weekly, the front-page story is about the blogging community - and if you read closely, there's a short article by a certain Ryan Kawailani Ozawa mentioning both IsleTies and this "talkstory" site. Pretty nifty, eh?
MORE...I'm creating a taglog for my website. And when I say "creating", I mean I'm writing one from scratch. It's actually a pretty simple thing to create. Any suggestions as to what sort of features you want to see?
Posted by Haken at 02:40 PMSince we are linked to our websites via the buttons on the left sidebar, what do y'all think of "mailto:" links on the avatars on the Profiles page? Seems to me rather than duplicate the website link again there, the mailing address might be more functional.
Agree? Disagree?
Posted by Linkmeister at 07:50 PMHawaiiStories is not even a month old, but with 21 members and over 100 posts and comments so far, I'd say we're off to a healthy start. And it's all because of you! So thanks. (Er, I mean, mahalo.) Now, here's a random assortment of HawaiiStories news, conveniently compiled in one place rather than posted willy-nilly.
Extra, extra, read all about it!
MORE...I Apologize For This Post
After a little experimentation, I found out that the first five words of an entry automatically becomes the title for the entry. So if you're using blogBuddy, or something similar, the trick to auto-posting to MovableType is to use five word titles. I guess I'll be writing a lot of bad poems.
I apologize for this post.
You're just sitting there,
watching me test this thing.
Perhaps we can dance.
Check this out. It's real time trough the Hawaii Stories' XML-RPC interface.
Recent posts to Hawaii Stories as of now.
Other than auto posting, there's not much else I can do with what I learned, mainly becase MovableType doesn't let you do very much through the interface. Now, if we were to hack the code a little, I'm sure we can customize Hawaii Stories' end to do what we want. But I digress.
Posted by Haken at 02:02 PMThe Prophet suggested down below that we should talk about a get-together in "meatspace," as it's called over at the main Blog Con boards. With some notice, I can do it on a weekend afternoon. I assume most of us have obligations during the week, so that seems like the easier part. The hard part will be finding a (roughly) central location so no-one has to drive too far. Since we don't have all the profiles up yet (subtlety, yeah?) I don't have a good feel for which part of the islands the participants would be coming from.
Ideas?
Posted by Linkmeister at 09:03 PMOkay...some success. I was able to get my website to talk to Hawaii Stories. First thing you gotta do is get an AppKey, which is something like a GUID that identifies your application to Blogger, or in our case, the Hawaii Stories' MovableType API.
MORE...Now that I'm a part of Hawaii Stories, I'm going to do something very interesting. I'm going to integrate the weblog on my website with Hawaii Stories using the MovableType API. I'll keep you all posted as soon as I have a beta up and running.
In the meantime, wanna check out what I'm working on? It's over at www.fireflyfans.net.
Posted by Haken at 10:29 AMWow! Ryan--you da man! This is really awesome! I went through the Diarist.Net links (I was in the process of stealing a link button when Steve emailed me about this project---I took it as a sign) and compared them with your Isle Ties list. The Isle Ties list is longer and, I think, more current.
MORE...And this may very well be the last "test post," as domain propagation seems pretty complete, and now all widgets work correctly. Yay! HawaiiStories.com. I'm not sure what it is just yet, but I hope you like it.
MORE...This is another test entry. Yes, that makes three. Yes, I used a photo of "me" (my wife) as the user icon for this account, even though I know full well "I" probably won't use HawaiiStories much. Yes, I know that means I'm probably going to kick "my" butt.
Posted by Scarlett at 08:13 PMThis is another test entry, posted in the hopes of testing the different author icons that appear with each post on the main page. If this works correctly, this post should be accompanied by a nice Ali-flower.
MORE...This is a test of the HawaiiStories blogging system. Had this been a real post, it would contain considerably more insightful, witty, or provocative content than this simple test message. So now you know.
