Small Kid Time TV

Yesterday I was browsing through Shirokiya when a very familiar song began to pipe through the store's speakers. As people may know, Kikaida is undergoing a revival of sorts. Reruns are currently being shown on KIKU, and there will be a Kikaida festival next month. This got me thinking: what are your fond memories of Small Kid Time TV? Kikaida? Checkers and Pogo? Battle Fever J? Professor Fun?

Okay, Linkmeister. You're exempt. :) Actually, I have my own little piece of fame connected with Checkers and Pogo. I won a Super-Simon in one of their contests. Didn't get to meet them though, darn!

I remember Checkers and Pogo, vaguely, but I think they predate me by a handful of years (in terms of my being their target market). I certainly remember "Professor Fun," which may or may not have been tied to some kind of "Clowns in Space" show that runs through my memory now and then. Can't remember the name for the life of me, though.

The Kikaida revival is neat, though. I see little kids singing the theme song today (who'd a thunk KIKU would hit any part of the preteen market?), when it was their parents who sang it as kids a generation before. I didn't know there was a festival coming up, either. I remember there was a Kikaida convention of sorts about a year ago, so maybe it's going to be an annual thing.

"Jiro, change-ee..."

I loved Kikaida when I was a kid... I have all the episodes on a VHS tape, they are still pretty good. I wish I could get a nice DVD though...

Here's a memory for you about the Checkers and Pogo show... remember the kid who had a birthday and got to grab handful of pennies from a jar and put as much as he or she could into a party hat? I used to dream about being that kid. Funny how pennies seemed to be a lot more money back then!

Posted by Tom on April 2, 2002 1:16 AM:

Ah, yes. I remember Kikaida and Kikaida 01.

How 'bout..

Kamen Rider (I only remember V3)
Go-Rangers (One of the orignal "Power Rangers")
Robocon
Ultraman
Mazinger Z
Raideen
I also remember going to a theater to watch an episode of Kikaida in 3-D. I cant believe the value of the toys that I had.. I dont remember what ever happened to them..

Later, as my tastes in tv programming became more sophisticated, I watched "Black Belt Theater" every Friday night on KITV.

Every afternoon I would lie to my parents about finishing my homework so I could watch Checkers and Pogo. I bugged them about going to the Sky Slide. We went to the one next to the Airport just once though. Anyone remember the Tiki Hut restaurant? I loved digging into the toy chest that was next to the cash register. OOH! and then there was Farrells.....

Posted by bunny on April 2, 2002 6:09 AM:

Someone died on a Sky Slide kind of ride on the mainland - I think in NJ? He decided to go headfirst in the rain.

More reminiscing: I was on the Checkers & Pogo show once with my brownie troop. I remember wanting to be the one to celebrate a Very Merry Un-birthday and pull a fistful of pennies out of the jar, yet not wanting to be on camera.

Farrell's was a national chain - I was surprised to find this out.

There used to be a Kikaidafans message board but alas, it's gone now. I liked Rainbowman better anyway.

Posted by Vivi on April 2, 2002 8:55 AM:

OMG, Farrell's! Every time my mom and I went to Ala Moana, I wanted to eat at Farrell's. I'd always get the clown sundae. Wow, I miss that place...

Posted by Stella on April 2, 2002 10:33 AM:

Did somebody say MAZINGER Z? OMG! I never watched it in Hawaii, and my brother was a bigger fan of Mazinger than I am (though we both were fans of Voltes V - later to become a cult icon/ political allegory for most Filipino GenXers when the Marcos administration forced its cancellation in the middle of the final season) but I do have fond memories of such. In fact, I actually have Mazinger pictures on my hard drive, which I'm planning to put up some time soon.

Yeah: Mazinger, Voltes and Ultraman, now running happily in reruns back home in Manila.

Somewhat related though: Is there still news about Crayon Shinchan coming out on DVD?

Posted by Vivi on April 2, 2002 11:50 AM:

Don't know about Shinchan coming to DVD (which would be awesome, BTW :) ) but apparently, Fox Kids UK is going to be airing dubbed Shinchan soon. Amazing. I'm wondering what all those British kids will think of the Zo-san dance or his half-nekkid hula? :)

Posted by Stella on April 2, 2002 3:17 PM:

Dubbed ShinChan! My God! Then again, I wouldn't be surprised if that becomes the next British TV hit - not that I would know much about British kids' TV beyond Teletubbies and Bob The Builder, but I've got the feeling that they're a lot more, shall we say, openminded.

I still remember that episode where ShinChan dances over Himawari's crib and thinking, How in the world...

Howzit,
Read your message board. Took me back to those hanabata days. The Kikaida chronicles were definitely the best. Kamen Rider was awesome too. Here's a couple of shows that I remember: Denjin Zaboga? Diamond Eye? Raideen? Rainbowman was cool, but why did he cry at the end? Drama, yeah? My wife was on Checkers and Pogo. Yes, she was one of those lucky kids who got to do the whipcream pie race. She was prepped for the contest. She knew that the one who looked the most messy, would win. So, she literally got the whole pie in her face and won the game. I never been on C and P but I did mail in my decorated turkey feather for Thanksgiving. And remember that show right before Kikaida? I forgot the title, but the host was a local Japanese man. He was very respectable. Any way, I sent in a drawing of Mazinger Z and he aired it on his show. Cool!

I was on the Checkers and Pogo show as a kid. Too shy to partake in any of the games though. I think my brother won the musical chairs contest. Kiakida and Rainbowman were my favorites.

I do remember Checkers and Pogo but since I grew up on island other than Oahu we could never go to an airing of the show.

I remember rushing home from Koko Head Elementary to drink Malolo fruit punch, eat Diamond Bakery cookies and watch C&P. Does anybody remember at the end of the show when one of them(I forget who!) says "all pau, pow pow pow" and points his finger like a gun? More innocent days, yeah?
Speaking of the Super Slide, does anyone remember the short-lived Castle Park?

Posted by Stella on July 29, 2002 9:44 AM:

Speaking of nostalgia trips, I was watching the news this weekend and they showed Professor Fun at the Collector's Show, which also featured a good number of KGMB's "old school" talent.

(What? Me watching KGMB on the weekend? Why would I do that? ;) )

Posted by macpro on August 3, 2002 6:14 AM:

It seems like a lot of people remember "Checkers and Pogo" around here, which is good. A few years ago KGMB TV did a retrospective look back at the show. The station (or maybe it was written in the media) admitted that a lot of the old Checkers and Pogo program tapes were erased weekly as new shows aired. That left the station with hardly any archival footage to use when they assembled the special, which featured interviews with the 3 men that portrayed Mr. Checkers (Jim Hawthrone, Dave Donnelly, and Jim Demerast), Pogo Pogue (Morgan White) and others in the cast. Several cast members were disk jockeys on the old KGMB radio (now KSSK). This occured because KGMB TV at the time was owned by Cec Heftel who had both the TV and radio station in his ownership portfolio.

Anyway, the show ran daily from 1967 to 1982, which is quite a long run for a kids show. They featured a lot of Hana-Barbera cartoons, and imported a couple of now famous Japanese made cartoons like "Speed Racer" and "Princess Knight." They also showed the British puppet series "Thunderbirds" and "Captain Scarlett."

Here are a couple of interesting links:

Article from the Honolulu Star-Bulletin.

Some pictures from the Checkers & Pogo magazine.

Now, does anyone remember "Captain Honolulu" shown on the old KHVH TV? (later became KITV)

Posted by Ryan on August 6, 2002 1:24 PM:

Thanks for the great info, Macpro. And I do remember reading, both for "Checkers and Pogo" and for many specialty shows like that, that erasing over old tapes was a common practice (perhaps the original Tonight Show?). To many, the medium was just as ethereal as radio, and few were thinking of history and archiving.

And 7train, of course people remember Castle Park. It wasn't that long ago, was it? Man, as a kid, I lived for those race carts and bumper boats...

Moved to Hawaii from Washington State in July of 1966. Watched the Checkers and Pogo show for about 6 years. There was a big drawing for a chance to win tickets to the Lion Country Safari in California. I remember sitting in front of the TV like I was getting ready to win the lottery. I yelled when the last number matched mine. My parents and sisters came running in the room. My Mother and I took a trip to Memphis, Tenn. from Hawaii. The tickets paid our way from Hawaii to California. It was great appearing live on the Checkers and Pogo Show as the Grand Prize winner! I remember my name be called and going out front and shaking their hands. Pogo was always my favorite. He cracked me up! Moved from Hawaii in 1975. Look forward to the day I can return for a visit.

Howzit, everybody! I'm a bit too late, maybe, in adding comments to this string but, I wanted to say (especially to Vivi, Tom & Rick) that I remember those Japanese superhero shows! Kikaida was my definite all time favorite. Also loved Denjin Zaboga (and his human "brother" Yutaka Daimon), UltraSeven (with the major babe, Agent Annu), & actually what was the "first ever Power Rangers" (actually called a "Sentai" team) - the Go Rangers (or, as we Hawai'i kids often called them, "Da 5 Rangers!"). Does anyone remember Inazuman [/Flash], or CondorMan (the Japanese one, NOT the Disney one!)? Well, if anyone is interested in talking story about those characters in more detail and/or keeping up with Hawai'i-based Kikaida events, etc., please feel free to check out (& join?) the Yahoo! Group called "Tokusatsu Planet". There's a nice bunch of people in there that chat about Kikaida, etc. all the time. Most of them are from Hawai'i but there are members from all over the world, too. K-den, take care everybody! Mahalos from, sidemachine P.S. To join a Yahoo Group, you have to create for yourself a Yahoo identity & password. No worries, it's free! IMUA!

old. At times it feels like only yesterday being at the studio filming the show. We had alot of fun
taping the show leaving me with many fond memories Even going to school at Thomas Jefferson P.S). We moved back home to Canada in 1980 but there will always be
a part of myself in Hawaii. If you remember us, please feel free to E-mail me. Take care everyone!

Wow! Sky Slide! Does anyone recall that there was a blue Sky Slide next to Mc Donald's in Waipahu? I SWEAR it was loads faster than the yellow one near Gibson's (Ah! Gibson's!)! No one I know seems to be able to confirm this.

I also rememeber vividly the dangerous playground outside Playwell in Pearlridge Phase I ("Uptown" my Ass!) That was a blast, I'd play there for hours with perfect strangers while my Dad cheerfuly waited for my Mother to finish doing the Mall Thing.

And Gem Department Store in Waipahu (a stone's throw from the Blue Sky Slide!) selling ice cream cones out front, replete with a Jolly Roger Coffee shop inside...and Clock's across the street.

I live abroad now, but I remember the 70's in Hawaii as a Golden Age, when we could still eat lots of eggs cooked in bacon fat with extra shoyu, my Mom had a beehive and it all seemed like it would last forever! A faded memory of a simpler time, to be sure.

I was on Checkers & Pogo. My friend had his birthday their, so a group of us friends went together. It was kind of fun, and they always gave goodie-bag so it was worth going. On the weekdays we always watched C & P, and on saturday afternoons it was 50th State wrestling with Lord Blears.

Oh man, when I was little, I loved Kikaida. I wanted so much to be Kikaida for one Halloween but we couldn't find a costume. I remember Captain Honolulu too. He would always come out of his helicopter to start the show.

Tom, I think you are talking about Tiki Topps. And you are right, the treasure chest was always something us kids looked forward to. And they would always give you the choice of chocolate pudding or jello for desert.

Farrells was good fun too. They used to give free sundae on your birthday, so when we went to Ala Moana we used to pretend it was one of our birthdays. Was kind of shame but, cause they would sing and make all that noise by your table and everyone would look. Eventually the management caught on and started asking for proof of birthday.

Dang! I just saw the Generation Kikaida website and it's takin' me back....my small kid time from '74 - '92 when I left for college. was that show (the pre-power rangers) called "Battle 5"? the one with the team of characters, "Battle France", "Battle Kenya", "Battle Japan", "Miss America" (the bot with the blonde wig...) can I get that on VIDEO anywheres???

Posted by Shingo on October 30, 2002 7:59 AM:

Hey Kristin!

Like my earlier post about my perceived edge on speed the blue Waipahu SkySlide had as opposed to the yellow Gibson's SkySlide, (which no one has commented on. Cmon! I need help!) this is one that I have wondered about for a while.

I too saw a show called Battle 5 in my now distant Hawaii youth and when the Power Rangers came out they seemed mysteriously similar to Battle 5, called I think Go-Renjaa (5 rangers) in Japanese. You saw this in Japanese with subtitles, probably on KIKU, right? I remember the yellow guy ate a lot of curry. That was his schtick. He was a little lumpy. Funny what the brain stores, you know I cannot remember anyones name 1.5 seconds after they introduce themselves. But I digress.

To come to the point- can anyone confirm/clarify/categorically deny the relationship of these two shows? Is it like a new version? totally unrelated? or maybe (and more tantalkizing) a Happy Days/Laverne and Shirley/Mork and Mindy kinda thing?

Shingo

Oops, sorry Kristin, didnt address your final question at all- I have NO idea if they are available on video! One Checkers and Pogo memory though- Does anyone remember On the Go? A little excursion like segment? Well segment in question took place at our fair Honolulu Zoo. Long story short, the hippo attacked the cameraman and he was toppled over and injured. They actually showed the footage of the hippo charging the guy (your perspective). It was so cool. My sisters and I were just laughing our guts out. Naturally we got chewed out. People getting hurt is NOT funny! Not even when they are holding a running camera and are charged by a raging hippo! Well I am here to tell you it was damn gut busting. Does anyone recall this? It was actually a lot like this show I saw called "When good animals go bad". You can guess what that was like. Damn, C and P were light years ahead of their time in the field of sensationalistic peudo-journalism!

A Very Merry Unbirthday to All,
Shingo

the series was called "Battle Fever J", shown on KIKU from 1979-1980. sorry, haven't seen video or merchandise anywhere =(... the only reason I know this at all is cause we recently dug the ENTIRE series out of the closet on BETA (yuck!) and had it transfered to dvd. I'm so excited!!

I remember Professor Fun! I think.. Didn't he have a show called "TV Pow"? I remember kids calling up this show, and you had to shout "POW POW POW!" into the phone. And supposedly it was hooked up to this video game that would try to shoot asteriods. You only had like 30 seconds or something like that. Does anyone else remember this??

Posted by mel on November 10, 2002 5:44 AM:

I vaguely remember "TV Pow" from the mid 1980s. I think it aired on either KHNL.

With all the recent ferver over "Kikaida", I was wondering if anyone remembered "Ultra 7" which was shown on KHON TV in the 1974 or so. This was a Japanese made super hero type of show where the good guys also battled latex foam monsters, similar to Kikaida...except that instead of reading subtitles over Japanes dialog, the entire show I believe was re-tracked in English... which of course created a kind of funny out-of-synch lip movement in the actors similar to what we get in the long running series of "Godzilla" movies. The only reason why I brought this up is because a friend of mine had me convert the theme songs from Ultra 7 which was available only on a 45 to a CD.

I was on the show once - they gave a bag full of stuff at the end - I don't remember much of what except coupons to Kennys (in the Kam shopp......in Kalihi) you know what I mean. The hippo episode of "On The Go" was my absolute favorite....."Here's what happened when are cameraman got too close to the baby hippo." In fact, on KGMB's 50th anniversary show, there was a short segment about this, and why the mother hippo REALLY charged the cameraman, which was because there were trying to get a clear shot of the baby and were attempting to distract her. I also remember the one with the guy who blew glass to make a cup, the popsicle factory, the underground Board of Water supply tunnels and more.

I have an old video of me & some friends at Castle Park. Remem ber the green water in Water Country?

What I have vague memories of from growing up in the 70s though, was the big sandbox in Ala Moana center located downstairs in the middle where the restrooms are now. Anybody can help me confirm this?

"Statistics prove that we approve of one birthday, one birthday a year....." the rest I don't remember except the chorus of course " A very merry un-birthday..." song comes from Alice in Wonderland the Mad Hatters tea party. Don't remember the sand box at Ala Moana but do remember Keiki Land and the Go Kart track that was there. As for Ala Moana Center, I don't remember the big sandbox but I do remember that in the big area between Liberty House and Shirokiya it was all enclosed in wire mesh and they had birds and trees inside... hard to believe now that they've totally renovated all of it! I remember Keiki Land, I used to go on the rocket ships that swooped up and over the room, and ride the roller coaster. Then we would go to Farrell's for ice cream and sarsparilla.

I am 44 years old now and still have some family in Hawaii, they live in Wailua. Speaking of Checkers and Pogo, I wathed that show every day, didn't it come on like at 4:00? It was on KGMB "COLORFUL NINE"..Great site.

I lived in Waipahu and Ewa Beach in 1969 and 1970. I Remember the Mcdonalds because they still only allowed men - teenagers to work there and they just changed to allow women. Also remember the Sky Slide. It seems to me that Gems was called "Wig-Wam" back then. In Ewa Beach I remember walks past the sugar cane fields to Tanka's to by Crack seed.

I was on the show when I lived in Hawaii as a child appox. 1969 or 1970. I would love any info, on how to get a copy of the old shows.

I'm trying to find out some info. My husband and his family lived there when he was a child. He has fond memories of "Checkers & Pogo." He was even on it and played games back in either 1969 or 1970. His family had a house fire when they moved here to Tennessee and lost all pictures made as children. I was just wondering if they have any of these old shows on tape? I would love to surprise him with this and watch his face watching it with our kids. If you could be of any help I would be grateful. I'm willing to pay whatever it may cost. Thank You.

Johnny Barend, Mr. Francis, Curtis Iaukea(o-o-o-oh yeah!), Lord Tally Ho Blears, and wot dat haole guy's name used to mispronounce da hawaiian islands just for piss people off? kau-ee, mau-eye, high-lo! hehehe!...ho, but now i stay all deprassed coz i feel real old, going have one chocolate milk insai da bottle coz Primo shut down long time a'ready.

Lived in Iroquois Point and Ewa Beach from 66-76. I remember Checkers and Pogo, Captain Honolulu (I can still do the upside down, hand glasses thing), Old Honolulu Stadium watching the Islanders play (and the Hawaiians), went to the Hula Bowl a few times. The Sky Slide in Waipahu was great, sliding on those smelly old rugs! I loved getting hot Malasadas (did I spell it right?) and shaved ice. Another commercial Iremember...Lex Brody, the sign had the animated guy using a hammer to hit a flintstones-like wheel. Starlight lanes bowling alley in Ewa Beach, Kalakauas dept store in Waipahu. Too many memories to mention. I really miss the Islands!

I was ON the Checkers and Pogo Show! I was picked out of the audience to participate in a watermelon eating contest! I finished first but Checkers called it a tie! I lived in Hawaii Kai and used to see checkers driving around in his checkered cadillac!

I have never seen the episode as my parents TV was broken! I would love to get a copy....geez I think that was 1976 or 77...

My how time flies!

Several people have mentioned getting a hold of old Checkers and Pogo TV shows. In 1999 KGMB aired a special about the show and it was indicated that the TV station had erased most of the shows while it was still on the air. They did this by taping over older shows with a newer one. As many know, the live Checkers and Pogo show aired in the afternoons and re-runs were played in the morning on KGMB. They would tape succeeding shows over copies of older shows, leaving almost nothing left.

That said there has been a VHS tape of the very documentary available for sale for some time. I don't know if it is still in print or not (I taped my own copy off the original KGMB TV broadcast), but you can find it at Mele.com.

Hey Jeff!

I thnk that some parents got together and complained that pigeon english was being spoken by teachers in public schools and they did not approve...so I believe on the "heels" of that the State in it's infinite wisdom, decided that DA bus should be THE bus...so it was changed!

Wonder how many tax dollars THAt took...when it could've gone to something worthwhile, like MUSIC classes in school!

I bet the schools do not issue ukulele's to their students anymore!

I still have mine with the state seal, from grade school!

Hi Viki,

I did not get a Ukulele when I was a keiki...Waialae Elementary, early 70's...:-(

I do however greatly miss the Islands (we'll be there in less than 90 days!!!)

I'm taking my wife and three kids to Oahu for 10 days. Just going to play tourist...but of course she's married to the ultimate tour guide. I thought this morning about driving around the island, starting out early, coming around Sandy beach, stopping at the lookout, top of Makapuu and actually got tears in my eyes. Although I live in Texas, my childhood and what made me...me...was my youth inHawaii. It was awesome...kill a haole day and all...:-)...

I look forward to future correspondence...Aloha!

Although I did not grow up in Hawaii Kai...I spent my youth there...did you go to Kaiser?

My father had a mexican restaurant in Koko Marina for 17 years called La Hacienda...do you remember it.

Spent my youth at Portlock Point and Spinning Caves...:-)

I played to Hot Potato game on C & P....Lost!

Hey Jeff!

OMG I totally remembered La Hacienda!I ate there many a time!

It was at an angle just as you rounded that bend going to foodland! I get tears every once and a while too! I live in California now and hae for many a year! I lived in Hawaii from 73-78...left right before I was to enter Kaiser high...my 3 older sisters went there though and my oldest graduated from there.

So many memories, Wards Warehouse, Poke (I make my own now)...

To this day I still shop Japanese markets, make poke and mahi mahi...in fact I just drank a Hawaiian Sun fruit punch at lunch today!

I too look forward to correspondence! Has you family been there yet? i am gonna assume no since you said you'll be the ultimate tour guide!

Did you ever walk out to the point at Hanama Bay and swim, or should I say get flushed in toilet bowl! Man were we crazy of what! My parents even did it!

take care and have a safe trip!

P.S. I got married in Hilo at the Hilo Hawaiian that I stayed at as a kid for a field trip in 6th grade!

Yes, that was the location, to the left Thrifty Drug Store and Ben Franklyn, to the right Magoo's and Foodland (that was then, who knows whats there now).

Yes, I spent many a day at Toilet Bowl (you know it's now fenced off to the public now). And what we called "Witches Brew" across the bay on the other side. We used to swim and find all the things that floated in from Sandy's (japanese fishing balls, slippah's, boogie boards, etc).

Things have changes so much, yet will always be a part of my youth. I too look forward to correspondence.

I probably prepared the food you ate, back in the day...:-)

Aloha,
Jeff

I never heard of witches brew....sounds interesting. Yea I haven't been back to Oahu in years, last time I was there was 1994 when I got married and that was brief.

My fadda was living across Kalanianiole HWY in those nice mansions. They had converted one of the mansions (that horrendous pink one) into apartments and my dad had a studio.

WHen we lived on Oahu, we lived in Mariners Village III in the back of the valley and my parents where members of the Hawaii Kai Yacht Club. I used to fish off and crab of those docks. And wehn the jelly fish would come into the marina we would have jelly fish fights, gross huh?! The things we did as kids!

Yea, the island is not the same, I have many a dream though of when I was a kid there....vivid!

Remember the kamaina's telling all us kids about the glowing walkers that would walk from the mountains to the sea every night, and any child that was caught awake, would be taken away with them...or something like that...all of those old legends..

Take care, have a great weekend, and by the way, if you prepared the food, then it was good! I ended up marring a mexican guy!

V,

Thanks for the reply. We used to skate at a place called Uluwatu's back in the vally by Marinmers Village. Do you remember the tree across the corner from the yacht club that "swallowed" the garbage can next to it? It was on the bottom of the hill going up to HaHaoine (I believe it was called) on the way to Sandy's.

Great memories indeed. I will be there in less than 90 days...:-). I can't wait, although the trip will be a strain on my budget (about 8K for the whole gig...5 people).

Aloha Viki, have a great week...

Jeff,The Kamaaina Haole...:-)

Posted by Viki Torch on October 11, 2004 9:26 AM:

Hey Jeff,

No I do not remember that tree...but I do remember Uluwatu's cuz I one skate there too.

My sister dated this guy Radford Ramones, and he used to skate straight down from the L in Larry Bertleman which was like the last drainage hole before you hit water!

He was/is crazy!

Howzit, haoles?!!
Manomanoman, does this thread bring back memories. Today, a friend brought up watching TV POW in Michigan, and it started a treasure hunt of memories from my childhood that I hadn't thought of in ages! TV POW with Pat McCormick and later Professor Fun led to Checkers and Pogo, who I couldn't even remember until I saw a cover of their magazine. I thought Pogo was the funniest dude ever! Granted, back then, my standards were a bit lower, but I miss that goofy voiced bastard. Other memories culled from this thread and my poor enfeebled brain. (This is from '73, when I was 6 months old, to '83, when I was 11)
Go Rangers (da five rangers! sweet!)
Kikaida
Battle Fever (when my friends and I played, we all fought over who would be Battle Kenya. The first episode, which had people praying to Saturn X, going a strange green color, and later turning into monsters for the Battle Fever team to fight scared me for weeks!)
Channel 13, which went from entirely local programming including the above to an almost entirely syndicated channel, introducing me to the wonder of Star Trek, He-Man, and G.I. Joe.
Castle Park- Go-Carts (which I rode with my Dad the first week it opened, waiting 2 hours for a 3 minute ride--we spun out and crashed into a bale of hay... I racked my nuts on the steering wheel!) Bumper Boats, the castle arcade, and of course, the best, WATER COUNTRY! The flumes, the rapids (my fave), the water gun forts, and the zip line...and the Pepsi Challenge always being taken right outside. When did it close?
Gibson's, the Super Slide, and Tilt all within 50 ft of each other--an 8 year old's dream!
Moanalua Elementary (kindergarten)
Punahou (1st through 5th grade) I know, I know, it was the bs snob's school. I don't know how I ended up there. Besides, they all hated me, but we did end up getting to go on a night trip to the Honolulu zoo! TOO COOL.
The aquarium, with the electric eel tank where you could hear the static put out. For some reason that room was always almost pitch black.
The cinderblock-like pier on waikiki beach where we could jump off into the waves, much to our parents chagrin.
Red flags on the lifeguard stands--shark/man-o-war alert!
Rented cabins on Bellows Beach.
Going to my dad's classroom at HBA, where he taught.
ABC discount stores on every corner.
MANAPUA MANAPUA MANAPUA!
Game World in the royal hawaiian shopping center, Fernandez Fun Factories on Kalakaua, Kuhio, Pearl Ridge.
Kahala Mall.
Cecilia and Kapono
Anyone remember the name of the Shaved Ice place in the International Marketplace?
Speaking of which, Ice Cream in the bottom of Shaved Ice! YUM!
The Monte Vista condo on Ala Wai and Liliuokalani.
Seeing Salt Lake from the top of Tripler Hill... and that ugly damn hospital.
Movies at Fort Shafter.
Faith Fellowship, the church we went to, held in a rented mortuary chapel near Diamond Head...
The banyan tree on Punahou's playground and the rope swing was the shiz. (Stein Metzger was in my class and punched me in the stomach when I accidentally ran into him!)
da toilet bowl
SANDBOX IN ALA MOANA!
BAREFOOT EVERYWHERE! EVEN SCHOOL!
watching filming for Magnum, then getting to go to lunch with Tom Selleck!
tantalus!

oh, god, I guess that's enough.

no one's been here in almost a year, so this might just be a random memory dump, but I hope it rings a bell with someone.....

Man I used to dream about sticking my hand in the Birthday penny jar when I was little. Checkers and Pogo hah man you gotta be like in your mid to late 30's to even remember that stuff.

Prof. Fun was alright too with that 'PAU/POW' video game they used to have.

I was a Super Chicken and Tom Slick cartoon fan back then.
