LA Riots-- 10 years later

Maybe we get a little detached when we live in Hawaii. We don't have major race clashes nor do we have many "black" people or "white" people so we don't have that tension causing trouble in Hawaii. We are one big ohana, or the so called melting pot. Hawaii has its own issues, such as the quality of public education and our government, but ethnic conflicts, thank goodness isn't one of them.

so then, what DOES is mean to be an Asian American?

are we Asian American or are we Hawaiian American, and are we American at all since many don't even consider Hawaii to be part of the US of A. (silly mainlanders, first they take over and make us part of them and then they deny that we are one of them)

So many things to think about.

Kim: One good thing about moving to the Mainland - if you'd stayed behind and seen what people do in UH Manoa when they raise the "race" issue, you'd scratch your head, too.

I don't know how everyone else has managed, but I've seen how a lot of people take it against each other. And it's not just a matter of White People Against Everyone Else - it's Hawaiians against Filipinos, Filipinos against Samoans, nonsense like that. I'm not naming any names, but I have seen funding pulled out from certain organizations just because the people asking for money were from a certain ethnicity for which the people handling the funds (who are certainly Not White People) carry political grudges against.

Hawaiian-American? That, I'm afraid, won't be the best way to describe the situation. The difference between the "Hawaii market" and the "Hawaiian market" is rhetorically important in more ways than one, and it's even more important considering all the political shifts now occurring throughout the state.

Personally, I've come to the point where I'd rather not deal with any labels at all, but if I had to, I'd rather be called a kama`aina - compared to being called a "settler," a "colonist," and (oh no) a "racist," at least I know I'm in good company.

Oh, I beg to differ. Ethnic conflicts in Hawai´i are far more subtle, and the more overts ones are directed toward whites.

Ask my white friend in high school what it was like to have pasty skin and attend a school in the middle of a Filipino 'hood.

I remember this one time an old Japanese man made small talk with me on the bus, describing how Japanese and Chinese students in his day would compete for grades. He encouraged me to keep the competition going. I didn't feel like talking to him in the first place, so I pointed out to him I'm Filipino. That shut him up.

are we American at all since many don't even consider Hawaii to be part of the US of A.

Simple formula to determine whether you're American: do you have voting representation in Congress?

Hawai´i may do things way differently from the rest of the nation, but so does Texas. People around here already think "Texan" is a box you check off in a census survey. Hawai´i isn't the only place with an overinflated sense of itself.

Does Texas have voting representatives in Congress? It has Phil Gramm, but he votes for Enron and its ilk, not for citizens in border communities, right? :)

Heheheh. The representation is there. Didn't say it had to be for folks in the colonias. And there are folks around these parts who still think Texas is a sovereign nation. No, really.

The truth is that there are no Hawaiians, Americans, Phillipinos, New Zealanders, Chinese etc. There is only us.

Race is an overlay concocted by stupid (as in unaware) minds and has nothing at all to do with nature, intelligence and love. Then the issue of race becomes profoundly more important than community and "I love you". It is an extremely bankrupt way of seeing the world.

What is important in all of this is not racism, but how we continue to keep ourselves locked in the ward of stupidity.

Did I already quote Paul Rodriguez in these pages? He said something to the effect that race doesn't matter -- with all the interracial breeding, we'll all end up Filipino anyway.

To answer the fucking gook kimkim, your not American and your for sure not Hawaiian you slanty eyed fuck. As if you fucking slopes being in Hawaii wasn't bad enough, You worthless fucks(Islanders & slopes) are coming more and more to the U.S. Oh well, I don't mind kicking your ass, Islanders are pussies unless they have their cousins and uncles to back them up(when their not rammin each other up the ass), and Asians are wimps unless they have their little gangs, bring it on, I look forward to it.

I have to admit that Hawaii would be a third world nation if not for the USA, and no I am not an American.

I am not a blind racist but I do believe certain cultures possess certain traits and that some races are more intelligent than others. I have never met a very smart Filipino and I find the accent annoying. For some reason Filipinos are dumb fucks, the same goes for native Hawaiians. Other Asian races have rich history and its members are intelligent, for some reason you Filipinos and Hawaiians are really dumb fucks.
