Hawaii Wins 1st NCAA Volleyball Title

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Costas Theocharidis had 19 kills as Hawaii won its first NCAA men's volleyball title Saturday night, beating Pepperdine 29-31, 31-29, 30-21, 30-24.

Hawaii beat Pepperdine for the first time in four matches this year, including the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship last week.

The Warriors (24-8) had never won an NCAA championship in any men's sport, and had only reached the men's volleyball final once. Pepperdine (29-5) is 4-5 in championship matches.

Theocharidis, selected the outstanding player, nailed the winning kill in the fourth game.

Sean Rooney led the Waves with 18 kills.

Although I was on the golf course during the game, we watched a replay upon our return. I actually cried when they won. Seeing their faces after years of frustration opened the flood gates. Or it could've been just a release from MY frustration after seeing them for years never make it regardless of talent!

I was elated when I watched the final kill. I ended up staying home that day to study and bang out papers instead of going out for Free Comic Book Day or anything else. So I had the game on in the background as I tried to finish up the final homework assignments of this semester. Maybe it sent good luck vibes since I aced my Japanese dialogue exam?

My mom the die-hard politics junkie was flipping back and forth between the volleyball and the White House Correspondents Dinner on C-Span; I'd never have believed it.

Oh. My. God. There'd be a dead body in my house if that happened. :)
