Union ads

Has anyone got a clue as to why we keep seeing 1-minute ads for HGEA all over the TV screen, particularly in very expensive time slots like the evening local news? It's not like they need to advertise for members, surely? If I were a member of the union, I'd sure as hell be asking why they're spending dues money on such vague feel-good stuff. And they're not plumping for any particular candidate, either.

Signed,
Confused

In a labor dispute, especially the kind involving public employees, half the battle can be over public opinion. HGEA is doing something smart--shooting for the public opinion battle before there's even a dispute.

Well, postulating that you're right, at what expense? Seems absurd to me.

Is there a dispute on the horizon? A battle just waiting to break? Didn't we just settle a giant statewide full-education strike with a two-year deal? (Or has it been two years already?)

I haven't seen these ads, but I suspect they are just an 'educational campaign' (kind of like political ads that technically don't endorse a candidate, but do). Keep us softened to all the good they do.

Personally, for all their PR and visibility, I don't think in the grand scheme of things, the HGEA is all that effective when push comes to shove. Which is kinda sad.

They negotiated the strike but then the Gov. did the backstroke didn't he?

Well, it turns out that they are in fact negotiating their new contracts as we speak.

BTW, I happen to know the "civil defense worker" personally. :)
