No Spiders, No Clones

Now that we've gotten our obligatory Star Wars posts aside, I think it's a good time to talk about some of the other movies coming out this summer that don't involve Jedis, spiders, talking stoner dogs, or British secret agents.

(Though if you do want to post about Austin Powers or Scooby Doo, feel free.)

My list:

And as for indie movies... none yet are showing up, although I might end up going to see The Debut when the FilCom Center opens next month and I'll also see if Y Tu Mama Tambien is still showing.

Anyone else?

Steven Spielberg's Sci Fi Minority Report! Trailer looks great, but, Tom Cruise?

I also liked Momento, and being that Insomnia is by the same writer, I hope it's a winner.

About a Boy...I admit, the only reason I saw it was that hubby had gotten free screening passes. Might I add, I have never been a big Hugh Grant fan, but boy did he ever look yummy!

Did I really say yummy?

Yes, you did. ;)

Tom Cruise. I know. I'd still see it, though.

Might I also add that I predict sales of Diesel jeans at Ala Moana will experience an upsurge as a result of Hugh Grant looking really foxy in them. (BTW: Didn't finish reading the book, but I recommend it anyway.)

Stella and Honukai pegged most of 'em on our short list. (This is a fantasy list, of course, since certainly parents of tiny babies don't get out to the cineplex very often.)

Lilo & Stitch for obvious reasons. Minority Report, if only because of the source material, but the trailers look good. About a Boy as the token romantic comedy, and because it's gotten surprisingly good reviews. Insomnia because of "Memento."

Also, The Sum of All Fears, which I think is being dropped right in the sweet spot as far as terrorist scenario movies are concerned. And Men in Black II because it's just dumb fun.

Aiyah, Men in Black II. I can't believe I forgot about that one. You can be sure I'll be lining Will Smith's pockets for this one in July, like I did the first time around. Fun.

I had a hard time with Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan in earlier Clancy books (well, I have a hard time with Harrison Ford in most movies...talk about one-dimensional "playing oneself" actors), but I'm not sure about Ben Affleck as Ryan either. Do not ask me who should play Ryan; I'm at a loss right now.

I'm hoping Changing Lanes is still in the theaters by the time The Sum of All Fears gets released because I want to have me a Ben Affleck double-feature.

The Bourne Identity with Ben's buddy Matt seems interesting. And the damn funniest preview I've seen so far is for Undercover Brother, but I'd only see it if I were dragged to it.

Minority Report strikes me as the kind of movie chock full of special effects to cover up the fact it's potentially good story was mangled by the time it was filmed.

Still waiting for Law and Order to hit the big screen ... heheheh.

Speaking of Ben Affleck: Check out this picture of him as Daredevil. (Again, because Jennifer Garner of Alias is in this movie: Be afraid, Sydney Bristow, be doubly afraid.) Too bad that the movie won't be coming out till Valentine's Day 2003, but, oh well...

And here's another picture (hi-res). Feel free to make all sorts of jokes about Ben playing the "man without fear" in said costume.

Minority Report has two strikes against it, in my opinion: Tom Cruise and Stephen Spielburg. Will the ending feel tacked on? I haven't read Dick's story, but he didn't provide the most uplifting endings...

Just saw the latest movie with Jennifer Lopez at Ward this past Sunday. Enough is...well...enough. I wouldn't say that it's J.Lo quality (pun intended; rim shot), but it does seem like a rehash of '91's Sleeping With The Enemy.

Bad Company with Chris Rock and Anthony Hopkins looks interesting...if only because I'd like to see how Hannibal Lecter does comedy.
