DC-area Kamaaina events

Since I've come to see that I'm not the only DC-area expatriate here, I was wondering if anyone else was planning on going to the lei-draping ceremony at Statuary Hall this weekend? There is a replica of the King Kamehameha statue there, and they will be having a small ceremony to celebrate his birthday. I've also heard that there is a replica of the Father Damien statue. The ceremony starts at noon on Sunday (2002/06/09). You need to RSVP so you can be put on the security list (since it is in the Capitol Building). If you want RSVP information, please let me know, and I'll email it to you (don't want to put some poor soul's email address and/or phone number on the web).

Also, there is a Kahoolawe exhibit at the Smithsonian Arts and Industries Building taking place from June 5th to September 2nd. Anyone interested in a field trip? :)

The Bunny had something to do with the Kahoolawe exhibit, as I recall. She mentioned it somewhere.

Well, I didn't have much to do with the exhibit, which has opened in the A&I building thanks to the Asian Pacific American Program folks, but I did go to the reception, where the Aloha Boys played.

I originally tried to book the Aloha Boys for our wedding, but alas, they never answered and now we've asked our friend, Eric (husband of Skarlet, for those who know her), to dj.

Anyway, the exhibit is ok. It's photography (I really liked the triptychs). My favorite part, alas, was not the historical part. It was the "base camp" area, complete with blue tarp. Brought tears of nostalgia to mine eyes.

The exhibit is actually a traveling one, I believe, and thus the content is not written by the Smithsonian (most shows in A&I are traveling/outside exhibits). It's nice to have representation, though, especially of something lots of people don't realize happened.

Don't miss the Chicano art exhibit in A&I, too, or the Magnum photo exhibit of the WTC/9-11.

Incidentally, one of the Aloha Boys, Saul Ho`opi`i, works at the Pentagon for the K-9 security unit, and he will be one of the featured stories told for the Natl Museum of American History's September 11 exhibit (opens on Sept 11).

Also, this fall at NMAH, there will be a photography exhibit - Through My Father's Eyes - of Filipino Americans from the 50s and 60s, I think. Artist: Alvarado? Don't quote me on that, though. I'm not at work, I can't double-check.

I wonder if I'm supposed to be telling this? Hmm, well, keep it hush hush then, 'k?

Need to get hold of the Aloha Boys and order I CD for a luau. Saw them at the NY Liberty Challenge Outrigger Race and they are great
