simone@fear.com

Two upcoming movies dealing with computer related stuff are opening soon. Other than watching the previews on TV I have no idea how good or bad these movies are going to be as far as being accurate in dealing with the computer related matter.

One is called Simone which is about a producer using a computer generated actress but only he knows about it, the rest of the world thinks she is a real person, well that's what I gather from the TV ads.

The other is FearDotCom which is a horror movie about a web site that kills.

There's only one reason why I'm so totally lining up for Simone, and his name is Pacino.

(Okay, let's face it, so Al doesn't have the same ol' magic like in the old days, but he was just so fantastic in Insomnia that I just can't help but want to watch this.)

And the other movie sounds kinda cheesy. (No, I'm not saying this because Pacino is not in it.)

I'm actually looking forward to Simone, but not sure I'll see Fear.com. I don't care for horror flicks.

if you're into the horror, fear.com is a decent one. simone looks interesting. i'm not sure you're going to get 'accurate' with either...

Simone looked interesting in concept to me, and like Stella, I'm willing to also give Pacino the benefit of the doubt. From what little I've seen, it makes me think of William Gibson's "Idoru."

It also makes me think about the fact that virtual celebrities are already a reality (no pun intended) in Japan.

The really sad part about the virtual celebrities in Japan is that most prefer it over a real female.

Remember a particular episode of Shoko ga Shiritai where this guy falls in love with the virtual girlfriend on his a Nintendo game? It was a dating game and the goal was, well, for one to get the girl.

I remember at one point when Tomb Raider was still "just" a videogame (before they made the movie with Angelina Jolie) that the company who made the game used to get letters from men who wanted to apologize to Lara Croft for "killing" her, complete with CGI-generated "vacation" pictures.

And don't forget those Maxim "bikini shoots" with Dr. Aki Ross of Final Fantasy, as well.

Um, topic... I just noticed that Stephen Rea (whom I also find strangely attractive) is in FearDotCom, which would've given me some hope if it wasn't for the fact that Stephen Dorff is in the lead role.

I'd like to remind our readers that Square USA actually made a movie with a computer generated female lead actress, who made the cover of several national magazines and I think did some virtual interviews on popular talk shows to promote the movie.

The movie? Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.

I saw it in the theater last year. Wasn't bad for a sci-fi movie, but then again it was not good enough for me to later buy the DVD.

I don't know if the female lead in Simone is computer generated or played by a real human actress acting as a computer generated person (Tron anyone?)....

Still the premise of the new movie sounds interesting, and Al Pacino is in it... so I guess that gives it some credibility.

BTW, Final Fantasy was one of last year's major box office bombs. Lost big piles of money enough so that it drove Square USA out of business here in Honolulu (where the movie was produced)....

Ah, Mel, yes. I watched the Square USA story unfold with hope (from Cayetano's gushing, to the movie release, to the hope for doing CG work for other movies), then, eventually disappointment. An apt comparison, though, with Final Fantasy (as Stella also mentioned).

In contrast, though, the character Simone in this new movie is mostly a real actress, but digitally buffed enough to look fake (which poses some interesting questions).

CNN and InStyle magazine tells us how to get Simone's "look." (Bet the guys at SquareSoft are kicking themselves now for not letting Aki sit down with InStyle...)

It's funny how some of the reviews I've read of the movie almost always neglects to mention that Simone is played by real-life Canadian model Rachel Roberts, whose previous credits include the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition and covers for Cosmopolitan.

And the hits just keep on coming...

Rotten Tomatoes gives a summary judgement on Fear Dot Com.

And Slate sums it all up in this week's Summary Judgement column, which also includes more critical takes on Simone.
