Vitural gathering

For those of us who can't make it there phyiscally and are waiting on-line for photos of the event, I figured it would be nice to start a new thread here and invite comments from the rest of us to cheer them on!

Since I live about a mile from Magic Island, I can tell you that the weather outside is looking good. Due to where I live I don't have a view of Magic Island to take a photo of to post on the web.

At the moment the camera is not pointing towards Magic Island, but if you go here you will presumably get a look from the Ala Moana cam. ;)

I'm jealous. We'll make it over there someday! :)

As okay, in the meantime we just comment up a storm here.

Right now I am watching "Time Squad" on the Cartoon Network and sipping on some water.

Next?

I'm waiting for Ryan to blog from a cellphone/PDA or something. :)

Posted by helen on August 18, 2002 3:23 PM:

He can do that? If so he can read this stuff now?

Posted by ali on August 18, 2002 3:39 PM:

That's right! Didn't he post from his PDA early on when things were just getting started?! Ha, ha, ha!

Posted by helen on August 18, 2002 3:56 PM:

Hopefully he brought it with him today and decided to check the web site while at the park.

Posted by Linkmeister on August 18, 2002 4:09 PM:

Hmm. Guess he didn't try. We'll have to chide him about that. ;)

Posted by helen on August 18, 2002 4:25 PM:

I suppose he did carry a lot of stuff to the picnic today and maybe the PDA got left behind.

Posted by Ryan on August 18, 2002 6:44 PM:

Okay, you guys, what've you been up to here? :) Funny thing was, I was thinking about whipping out the Visor PDA and Sprint PCS data cable to drop a note here, but was too afraid to use my phone in case someone (Cheyne!) called... And he did!

So, photos and recap coming soon, but even with the madness that was Magic Island, 'twas another great gathering. Present were: Panther, Lisa and Vince, Peter and Aeryn, Stella, Kreeesty and Jelly, Cheyne, and of course Jen, Katie and me (or is it I?).

Lots of great ideas were tossed around, including of course our next shindig. Chances are it'll be in late October, this time on the Windward Side (Kailua Beach?).

Thanks for coming, everyone, and for those who couldn't make it, you were missed (and of course talked about!).

Posted by Lisa on August 18, 2002 7:36 PM:

You forgot Zac! What is it they say about second children?? :)

...and speaking of forgetting, wasn't I supposed to get a democracy badge for registering to vote last month? hehe.

Posted by Stella on August 18, 2002 7:47 PM:

All you virtual gatherers, you! Maybe we should have this thread up again in October! (Maybe I'm going to be the one with the wireless PDA by then!)

Yes, it was fun - good company, good food, and a very relaxing time just being right by the ocean. Lots of good ideas coming out, too!

Of course, Ba-Le gave me chicken lumpia instead of the banana I requested (hmmm... wonder why they gave me chili sauce to go with it), and I was also the one who was silly enough to suggest that maybe we should move the picnic to Hilo (so we could visit Ali and Tom, ahem) but... well, we'll try go Windward for the next meeting, so we could eventually avoid the eau de Ala Wai that will pollute Magic Island once the dredgers come in. ;)

And in the end, a good time was had by all. Mahalo for making this a special one!

You want silly? How about making a joint get-together with the monthly Austin journal writers get-together?

October's meeting is on 10/6/02 at a coffeehouse with wireless Internet access. Heheheh.

Posted by Ryan on August 18, 2002 8:13 PM:

D'oh! Yes, Zac! Man. It's true. Sad, but true. And yes, Lisa, I did promise you a Defender of Democracy prize of some sort! Guess you'll just have to make our third gathering to find out what it is...

Photos up! Not many, but since there were cameras everywhere, I hope to see many more.(Thanks to Lisa, Katie spent most of the picnic wielding a digital camera too!)

Posted by Lisa on August 18, 2002 8:31 PM:

I just finished downloading Katie's pictures- all 165 of them. And, while there are a few decaptitated people and an interesting series on grass, there are many good pics in there.

While not all entries are in yet, I think Katie wins first prize for doing the best job documenting this gathering! The people (and rabbit!), the grinds, the scenery- it's all there.

Posted by ali on August 18, 2002 8:35 PM:

Thanks for thinking of us, Stella! Of course, we don't think it is a silly idea at all! :) A picnic here would fun--I know Ryan and Jen would like to visit.

Ryan, thanks again for the wonderful photos! Looks like you guys had a blast. (And chicken lumpia is sometimes even better than banana!)

Posted by Linkmeister on August 18, 2002 9:52 PM:

Wow. Lisa's remark about 165 pix really makes the point about digital cams. Imagine if you'd given regular film camera to a small one and had all those rolls to unload and reload, and then develop!

Posted by Haken on August 18, 2002 11:22 PM:

Better watch out. Katie will ask for an associate position at your company soon.

Aeryn and myself had a great time and are looking forward to the next one.

My guess is the rabbit got more photos taken than anyone else ... and deserved to! Next time I'll try to have enough tobacco on hand so nicotine craving doesn't drive me away before the VERY tardy Cheyne manages to get there.

Posted by Sherry on August 19, 2002 10:26 AM:

Looks like the gathering was loads of fun. Hmmm, one day I'll make it there, too.

Posted by sun on August 19, 2002 1:12 PM:

Very very sad I couldn't make it (again). Of course I'm thousands of miles away. Do one in January! I'll be home for a visit then.

Hello?! What kind of FOOD was there?! I hope not just rabbit pellets.

Posted by Stella on August 19, 2002 2:20 PM:

Sun, just for you: chicken lumpia, `ahi limu and `ahi wasabi poke, macaroni salad, chips, salsa, and Zippy's chili - plus rice, nori, and soda.

And this is just the food that actually showed up...

::proceeds to drag out dying horse, which she smacks around with a Louisville Slugger.::

God willing, we might even have alcohol for the next picnic! ;)

Posted by Stella on August 19, 2002 2:26 PM:

And, oh yeah, baby formula - but only for Zac. Just saying.

On HawaiiStories or some other site?

October's meeting is on 10/6/02 at a coffeehouse with wireless Internet access.

Will be off-line launching model rockets on that day between 2pm-6pm HST. While I do own a PDA it's a pudly Palm IIIe with no on-line service.

Hey everyone!

Thanks again for having me at the shindig! It was one groovy time! Sorry again for being tardy (sorry Albert and to everyone else who waited!) But thank you again for humoring me :) LOL

I definitely look forward to another get-together. This is the closest we'll get to a blog convention :-p

Maybe we should have a blogathon also? LOL Just thinking out loud.

Heh. We would have had it for this one (never mind I got a ticket for drinking in the park last Sunday), but my pockets were empty. These affairs need to be arranged after the THIRD WEDNESDAY of the month.

Actually, I meant in real life. As in you all flying your posteriors out here to the Mainland! ;)

This is the closest we'll get to a blog convention

:: cough, cough ::

(Although it's not really blog-specific. Then again, neither is Webzine.)

Posted by Linkmeister on August 23, 2002 8:43 PM:

I'll see that cough and raise. That one is going on as we speak in Vegas. There's also something I've seen called "meetup" which has some nifty features like picking the city to see if there are already-scheduled gatherings going on.

Posted by Ryan on August 23, 2002 8:51 PM:

Ah, Meetup.Com. Unfortunately the blog group (which I linked) hasn't yet mustered the critical mass to actually have an event take place (I just get monthly reminders to vote, then monthly notices that the event was cancelled). Someday. Donna, Cheyne, and some other familiar names are already there.

I wish the Blog-con folks luck with their Vegas bash. Planning seemed pretty free-form, which suits the genre perfectly. Journalcon is heading into its third year in San Francisco next month...
