UH vs. BYU: Take Two

I'm not much of a sports fan. I can barely tell the Mariners from Dan Marino. But I'm definitely excited about today's UH football game in Provo against arch-nemesis BYU.

There was a story in yesterday's paper about how some businesses are just giving up, saving workers the trouble of calling in sick and just sending everyone down to the local sports bar to watch the game. I'm not so lucky, but I'm listening to the game on the radio.

Forefront on everyone's mind is the Rainbows' 72-45 thumping of BYU last year. As much as BYU coach Gary Crowton tries to downplay it, everyone knows the Cougars are looking for revenge. We broke their 13-0 winning streak on national television, destroying their chances to make the Top 10.

Meanwhile, the Rainbows have a lot to prove. Was last year's rout a fluke? Our guys are 3,000 miles from home (and 4,000 feet up), in front of a capacity crowd of BYU fans. We've never won in Utah. And today they're gunning for us more than ever.

If you're planning on watching the rebroadcast tonight on OC16, don't read this thread! 'Cause I'm hoping to hear what others think while the game unfolds, and I'm definitely going to know who wins the second it happens.

The gods must be getting worked up over the game, too. A sudden thunderstorm is drenching both sides. Lightning seems to have knocked broadcasters offline for a while there. ESPN broadcasters explained stadium contingency plans for evacuation.

But. We're leading, 17-7. No complaints here.

What's fun is Todd Christensen doing color, while his son (if I heard it right) is playing for BYU and (I think) caught the touchdown pass to make it 17-14 UH at halftime.

Oh, and the broadcasters seem to have forgotten the *%#*! name change---they keep calling UH "the Bows." Good on ya, guys!

Heh. Link, I forgot myself!

Robert Kekaula is really obsessed with the weather. I think he's running out of ways to describe rain.

By the by, CollegeSports.Com has a Gametracker on the Hawaii vs. BYU matchup.

Uh-oh. BYU offense heating up. They got a touchdown, and intercepted our second play thereafter.

Score now 21-17 BYU.

Finally. We're looking tired out there. Hawaii touchdown, 28-24 with BYU still in the lead. Just 14 minutes left in the game.

D'oh. Another BYU touchdown after a 15-yard penalty against Hawaii for "unsportsmanlike conduct" (I didn't catch the offense). Score now 35-24 BYU.

We were pretty blatant gloaters and braggers after last year's game. I'm beginning to wonder how the end of this game will play out...

One last touchdown and two-pointer for Hawaii, but it's not enough. Final score 35-32 BYU. June Jones burned his last two timeouts in the last 25 seconds, and the Cougars then ran out the clock.

I don't think either team is happy with their overall performance tonight. No standouts. If Hawaii was a little more on, or BYU a little more off, it could've gone the other way. That bodes worse for the Cougars than the Warriors, I think, but then again, they're now 10-0 at home.

Ah well. At least they didn't have enough to gloat about. And for me, pau hana!

The unsportsmanlike conduct penalty was apparently for removing a helmet on the field.

Four interceptions, even if one was tipped, are not gonna make either Timmy Chang or June Jones happy when they see the tape.
