Adventures in Absentee Voting

I just finished completing my absentee ballot (the orange section for the curious). I found the process most educational, and learned that the Natural Law Party isn't as half-baked as I'd assumed. But can anyone tell me exactly what the Free Energy Party is? They don't seem to have a web site.
Anyway, these sources were helpful:

I tried to do as much research as possible on the candidates, but I confess falling back on the Advertiser's recommendations on a few races.

I don't think the ballot was very well designed (not Floridian bad, but not great either). And the yellow envelope was too small for the ballot.

All in all though, not a bad experience. I think I'm ready for the general election. Are you?

Adventures in newsgathering, too; ABC News has a daily political letter to which I subscribe (free), and on both Monday and Tuesday of this week the editor insisted that Hawaii's primary was Tuesday (yesterday). On Monday I was amused and e-mailed a correction, but it wasn't acknowledged and the date wasn't fixed in the Tuesday edition. I am no longer amused.

I sure hope I have to fight lines and crowds on Saturday, but I doubt if I will; primaries don't pull like the generals, and the voters haven't been doing very well in those either lately.

All I have to say is that I'm STILL awaiting my yellow card which tells me what location I'm to vote at..

Anyone know how I go about finding out?

Yes, the Advertiser article Lisa posted has a link to the Office of Elections webpage where you can check your polling place.

Hey! The Free Energy Party! I posted about them... er, him, a little while ago...

David Cunningham started the party after realizing he was The David from the Bible, and that the solution to our island energy woes is to nab ourselves some nuclear-powered Navy submarines and plug them into the power grid.

The Natural Law Party is... interesting. Remember the whole flap over their presidential candidate (quantum physicist) and the debates in 2000?

I don't expect crowds on Saturday. One, as noted, several districts were redrawn and polling places moved, and frankly, I suspect thousands of islanders just won't bother.

Secondly, of course, there's a few big games on Saturday as well. It's a very relevant fact in some districts (including the one in which my candidate is running).

The economy is the most important issue that needs to be addressed this election cycle. People need to look at the records of the candidates in terms of how they vote or address issues that hit our pocketbooks (such as taxes, spending, budget, raiding of special funds, etc)...

With that said, here are a few links to help you make an informed choice this Saturday. Keep your pocketbook in mind when you head for the polls. Will candidate X or Y cost me more money in the next 2 to 4 years.

  • Business Ratings of Hawaii Legislators

  • Holding Legislators Accountable - Senate Pt. 1

  • Holding Legislators Accountable - House Part 1

  • Small Business Hawaii Primary Election Endorsements

Be sure to VOTE this Saturday!
