The Shaka

Does anyone know how this "hand sign" originated? I never saw it until I came to these islands.

Here's a response to that question as posed to the Star-Bulletin about six months ago: http://starbulletin.com/2002/03/31/news/kokualine.html

Ah, thanks Lisa! I have a scholarly French fan who always asks dozens of questions. Since I just added another picture (Prince of Memphis) featuring the shaka, I was sure she'd ask. I was surprised she hadn't done so when the first such picture (The Sleeptalker) went up. So I was able to anticipate her and sent her this URL, got an amused reply already.

A bit grim to think that such a happy-go-lucky sign might derive from someone losing three fingers!
