New TV Shows

This week is the start of the Fall TV season. Any comments about the new shows or the ones that are returning?

I was really looking forward to tonight's season premiere of Buffy, but I've discovered that KFVE isn't airing it anymore.

Urge to kill...rising....rising....

KFVE terminated their contract with UPN. None of the UPN shows are airing on KFVE anymore. Some UPN shows are showing up at odd hours on KHON TV and KGMB TV, both owned by Emmis Communications. Scheduling for UPN programs these 2 stations will air is spotty and none will be in prime time. Last weekend for example, KGMB aired 2 episodes of "Enterprise" and the new "Twilight Zone" on Saturday afternoon.

As for new prime time shows the ones I sampled so far are:

"Firefly" a wild west adventure that takes place in outer space...

"John Doe" also on Fox about a guy who emerges from a little island knowing everything about the world but nothing about himself. This is an interesting show with some promise.

Personally, I'm waiting for November Sweeps and the live Jello-wrestling match between Kim Gennaula and Jade Moon...

Okay, that wasn't funny. Seriously now, folks.

I'm such a big fan of CSI, and y'all know I think David Caruso is cute, but there's just something about the CSI: Miami spinoff that hasn't sat well with me. The reason why I loved the Vegas-based original was that all of the characters never tried too hard to be sexy, because 1) they were hard-core nerds to begin with (eg. Grissom and Sidle, notoriously inept with dates) or 2) they're too hard-bitten and burned-out with their lives that the only release they get is from work. With Miami, however, all I'm getting is sexy David Caruso and sexy Kim Delaney bossing around a bunch of young geeks who, I have to admit, are more interesting than both of them combined - which is disappointing, since I've always thought Caruso's character was more of the haunted-soul type. But again, this is just the first week.

(That said, I like the fact that their ballistics expert is, uh, a "polite Southern belle" named Calleigh.)

Otherwise, I can't wait until Thursday, so I could get a glimpse of Without a Trace and Push, Nevada (yeah, I missed it - and, dammit, I can't believe I also missed Matt Damon on Bernie Mac, too!)

I also want to see Firefly - especially since our very own Haken runs the fansite - plus it really looks like a lot of fun.

And, critics be damned, I'm so totally watching Fastlane anyway...

I had no idea KFVE dropped UPN. Fascinating. Does that mean we're out of luck with stuff like Enterprise, too?

The only value I see in that station is the frequency with which they air Simpsons episodes. Every few years they drop it altogether, but they reliably come crawling back eventually.

I want to see Firefly too. In addition to the Peter connection, it just looks great. (Or, er, did I miss the premiere? Some of the stuff on Peter's site seem to write about it in the past tense...)

Yes, "Enterprise" is going to be aired on KGMB. According to an article in last week's Advertiser, "Enterprise" gets aired on Saturday at 10:30 pm. However it wasn't listed in this week's TV Guide.

Ryan, you missed the premiere of Firefly. I dunno, for me the jury is still out on this one. Don't know if it will last the entire season, but the first episode did not look promising to me. Maybe it is because I could not relate much to the young characters (I am getting closer to old fut status as time goes by) in the series, and maybe too because of its rather odd juxtiposition of mixing space age technology and that of the wild west.... Of course after years of being weaned on many a Star Trek series, the most fantastic Babylon 5 and the eerie X Files, I find it kind of difficult to immerse myself in the seemingly youth dominated universe of Firefly.

But then I've only seen one episode, so maybe I might give this show a chance and watch a few more times.

What I found that better was John Doe which has kind of an odd X Files-like and perhaps a Sixth Sense twist to it....

As for returning shows the only one that I am anchored to every week is ABC's The Practice which makes its season debut this weekend (Sunday).

As for KFVE TV, they are now the exclusive home of THE WB network....and Simpsons, King of the Hill and Star Trek Voyager reruns.... not to mention the money making U.H. Sports broadcasts that pre-empts anything else on their schedule.

I have since discovered (through searching various online TV listings) that KHON is airing new Buffy sporadically. KHON also airs Buffy reruns, so I suppose it makes sense.

I missed the premiere of Firefly, because I was playing videogames. ::sigh:: I still need a TiVO apparently.

Anyway, a good site for checking what's on is TV Picks. If you want the information delivered directly to your inbox, join the Remote Patrol mailing list.

Vivi - I've seen the season premiere of Buffy and you didn't miss much. Nothing really new to report. No mention of Tara's death, further the episode was very spotty and disjointed. There were many scenes with no explanations of what was occuring, it was probably one of the worst Buffy's I've ever seen. It was so shallow. If you need more info let me know. You can also check The Kitten Board, if you already knew all that, sorry, I was just trying to be overly helpful.

Hasn't anyone been watching the rebroadcast of Ken Burns "Civil War" on PBS?

Posted by Linkmeister on September 26, 2002 7:52 PM:

I saw it the first time, kane. I always have a problem with mini-series programming, because it seems like such a time commitment. If anyone has not seen it, tune in; the story is familiar enough that you can come in in the middle without a problem. It is spectacular.

Posted by Ryan on September 27, 2002 5:58 PM:

Ooh, late note, but the second episode of "Firefly" is tonight on Fox at 7 p.m. - at least according to Yahoo...

Posted by Stella on September 27, 2002 10:32 PM:

Okay, I finally saw Firefly, and while I love the whole vibe of the show (think Star Trek with a more laissez-faire view of foreign policy), the dark cinematography has only convinced me that I should get a new TV pretty soon... or at least digital cable, because the reception on Ol' Bunny Ears has been shot as of late.

I also love Robbery Homicide Division (think: a more brutally amoral L&O), but... come on, whose idea was it to set a scene in a Korean bar in Koreatown, L.A. only to have a scene where the Korean bar hostesses are arguing in TAGALOG? Maybe I'm a little too observant, but even a non-Filipino who's not from Hell-Ay (tm Ted Casablanca) will tell you that "Puta'ng ina mo, umalis ka diyan!" is not a Korean insult.

On the bright side: The CSI/Without A Trace doubleheader on Thursday nights have given me some faith in Jerry Bruckheimer's excellent taste in television productions. (Extra points for promoting Marg Helgenberger's ass-kicking Catherine Willows to police captain, and putting the assorted lab geeks on as regulars.) Also, nice to see Andre Braugher back on TV again, even if he does play second fiddle to David Morse's ask-questions-later lead in Hack.

And to answer the question of "Why am I watching Fastlane? WHY?": Because, after working in an all-male office and dealing with tech geeks all day, it's nice to see something nice and shiny that doesn't tax the brain cells. And I'm suffering from American Idol withdrawal, OK? I need something cheesy.

Forgot to add:

Urge to kill... rising... rising...

This, in a nutshell, describes my feelings about the aforementioned Emmis/ KHON-KGMB merger, for reasons too complicated to disclose. Ahem.

How old is the TV? Mines lasted about 12 years or so when I noticed that the picture tube was displaying really dark pictures.

Posted by Stella on September 27, 2002 11:23 PM:

The TV's not too old; it's just that the reception is awful - hence the nickname Ol' Bunny Ears, because I'm too cheap to get cable. Watching that episode of Firefly on my current 13" screen TV made me feel like I was watching the whole thing through a murky fish tank - although, like I've said, the cinematography was a tad too dark to begin with, and I'm sure it would've looked even more splendid on a digital screen.

(In all due fairness, however, my eyes also got strained when I switched from the dark interiors of Firefly to the Heat-inspired gritty composition of Robbery Homicide..., which should not come as a surprise since Michael Mann is the executive producer of the latter show.)

Remind me, then, to not watch The Matrix when they finally show it on TV next week...

While the TV listings in both the Adverister and the Star Bulletin lists Relic Hunter as been on at 10:30 pm on Saturday on KGMB, Saturday's Adverister says that Enterprise will be on that time slot.

Posted by Linkmeister on September 28, 2002 2:07 PM:

Helen, if that's the case, my Mom and I are gonna be ticked. That's the high-camp event of the weekend!

Posted by helen on September 28, 2002 3:02 PM:

I have no idea when and where Relic Hunter is going to be aired.

Posted by Ryan on September 28, 2002 7:53 PM:

Yep: Search for 'Enterprise' is over: 10:30 p.m. Saturdays, KGMB-9

I watched the first fifteen minutes of "Firefly," until we realized we were out of diapers and made a last-minute dash to a nearly-closed Costco. I'll agree it's different... but it didn't grab me. Perhaps the pilot was better?

Posted by Stella on September 28, 2002 11:52 PM:

Ryan, I'll have to agree that nothing grabbed me about this episode of Firefly, but the last 15 minutes of the second episode really rocked. Compare it with something like Enterprise and it can get particularly slow and unengaging (especially when you consider that this particular ep's script was kind of leaden), but when the action does kick in, it's not too bad.

I guess I, like a lot of other viewers, was hoping that this would be to Joss Whedon what Alias was to J.J. Abrams (who eventually ended Felicity once the other show took off), but even Alias didn't grab me at first, either.

(Then again, I'm trying to recover from my addiction to Alias, which has only made me more resolved to not watch it this season.)

I don't know if I should comment on this thread or on the thread titled Little things that annoy but according to this week's (Sept. 29) issue of the TV Guide from the Advertiser it still list Relic Hunter as being scheduled at 10:30 pm on Saturday night. No listing for Enterprise.

Posted by Linkmeister on September 29, 2002 4:15 PM:

Well, from sad personal observation, it sure wasn't Relic Hunter on last night, so...

E! Online's take on this week's ratings.

(A clue: Guess which one of Joss Whedon's two highly anticipated shows actually had better ratings than expected? Actually, it's not who you think...)

Anyone watched American Dreams? I gave the premiere show a try on Sunday night. It's a family drama set in 1963 with the premiere episode set the week leading to November 22nd. It had a fairly good story and a great 60s music soundtrack with clips from American Bandstand thrown in. Fact is the story kind of revolves around the famed TV show while it was still beamed daily from Philadelphia. It also helped that this show is co-produced by Dick Clark, which lends the show some authenticity with the clips it shows... Overall a fairly good show for us trailing edge Baby Boomers. Might even appeal to younger Gen X types too. Give it a try. Sunday nights, 7PM - NBC KHNL Channel 8.

Just some quick reminders:

Don't forget that Enterprise is now airing on KGMB at 10:30 PM, while Buffy is airing on KHON at 11:35 PM.

Here's hoping for accurate schedules...

Posted by helen on October 7, 2002 9:04 PM:

And Relic Hunter is on KFVE, 6pm on Saturday.

And Stargate SG-1 got moved to 1:35 am on Sunday morning on KHON (luckly I have a working VCR).
