Demand a raise? I'd be fired.

Quick poll.

In the private sector--the real world--if I demanded my employer for a raise and they refused and then I walked off the job as a result, I would be fired.

How about everyone else on here?

yea, not belonging to a union usually means no bargaining power. But how 'bout we all go on strike and demand that things cost less so that no one needs more money instead?

Been working for the UH system for over 21 years as an Information Technology Specialist, of course when I started the position was initially termed as a Systems Programmer, then it got changed to a Computer Specialist around early 1990's, then to it's current title around 3 or 4 years ago. I should also point out that my position is a non-teaching position.

The way the bureaucracy works around here for the non-teaching positions like mines (there is a different set of procedures for the teaching positions) you have an easier time applying for a higher paid position than going through the motions of getting your position a higher pay rate.

If that fails, you can always wait for the union to negotiate across the broad wage increase and/or step increase. Even this hasn't be consisted through the years. Even the length of time for the contract varies from time to time. In most case it's been a 2 year contract, twice to my memory I have seen it as 4 year contract.

Truth be told between now and the time I retire (which at least another 10 years) I be a happy person if the HGEA (the union that represent us) is able to negotiate for us without calling for a strike because in our little corner of the world your average Hawaii resident is not going to be inconvenienced by striking UH non-teaching personnel.

I would just be happy if I could find gainful employment as an Instructional Designer in any field. :-)

Unions have outlived their usefulness by many decades....just like the Republicans and the Democrats. They claim to need bargaining power and what not, but take a look at the vast majority of professions that are actually able to carry out a strike here in hawaii? Teachers, bus drivers, stevedores/longshoremen, nurses....what do all of them have in common? They all do professions where they are able to effectively hold much of the island or state hostage with their strike....this is the heart of the matter, nothing more. Some of the bus drivers make 40 something K per year and maybe more after this?! Give me a fucking break....YOU DRIVE A FUCKING BUS!! Any monkey could do it...I know other programmers and engineers who make much less than that....

I think it's time to bring back the old union busters with axe handles and black jacks from the 1920's..
