Lingle's Singles

The recently revamped official web page of Gov. Linda Lingle comes with an added touch one might not expect from a politico: a soundtrack. The music mavens at the Mountain Apple Company provided the high-quality MP3 tracks, which include some standards, and some surprises. What's your take on her playlist? Are there any other politicians begging for a musical dedication?

Thanks to the little birdie that clued me in to the governor's new tunes (get a HawaiiStories account, will ya?). Said birdie noted some curious titles: 'Pineapple Princess' and 'Coconut Girl' (Lingle's 2004 election nicknames?), 'Are You Native?' (is she?), and Willie K's 'Molokai Woman' ("Kinda racy for the Gov, eh?").

More notably, the songs don't have to be streamed... Ahem. Enjoy 'em while you can get 'em!

Hey! If you have Quicktime Pro, simply click on the "Down Triangle" to the right of the play bar when the song is playing on screen to save a high-quality MP3 to your drive.

Otherwise, view the page source to get the url to the MP3 file and download it directly in your browser. Then do a "Save As Source" from your File menu.

Import the saved file into your favorite MP3 player and you have the song to enjoy whenever you like!

My favorite is iTunes on Mac OS X. iTunes for Windows should be out in the next couple of days!

Mahalo Linda, you Coconut Girl!

Macintosh users can install something called Wire Tap that allows you to save streaming audio content to your computer. Can be audio of just about any format. After you save the stream you can convert it to mp3 using Apple's very popular iTunes software.

Speaking of iTunes, how is their online catalog as far as Hawaiian music is concerned?

Of course, now that it's available for PCs, I could just check myself...

iTunes Music Store has some Hawaiian music. Much of it is held by Cord International. Most of it is older music (1950s-60s), very classic. You'll also find much Elvis referenced, Les Paul, etc., with their steel guitar music and hapa-haole songs. But there is some REAL Hawaiian music there, too. Search for "Hawaiian" or "Hawaii" and you'll find small bunches of it.
