Little Gold Statues

It's that time of the year again. The nominations for the 76th annual Academy Awards were announced this morning. Once again, being an uncool domesticated dad, I've barely seen a fifth of the movies on the list. Any nominees you liked? Any movies you think should have made the cut?

"Lord of the Rings" got a heap of nominations. Haven't seen it yet, but I'm sure it deserved it. I was glad also to see Johnny Depp up for Best Actor - although normally campy comedies are long shots, I actually saw "Pirates" and thought he was brilliant. And now I really want to see "Lost in Translation." C'mon, Netflix!

Did you know Best Director nominee Sofia Coppola ("Lost In Translation") is the first American woman up for that category?

I'm almost totally out of it this year. Only one I've seen is "Whale Rider" (best actress nomination).

I saw LOTR last week, and thought it was great. That's the only one I've seen, though.

I can't find the extended version of the 1st LOTR movie at Suncoast or Blockbuster or Circuit City; I have the second one, and I'd like to collect the set to go with our Christmas DVD player. I guess I'll have to go to Amazon.

Ah, "Whale Rider"! I'm thrilled that Keisha Castle-Hughes got a Best Actress nomination. Youngest ever for the category. And to think, the film's distributor was lobbying for her in the Supporting Actress category.

As far as snubs, most of the whining seems to be about "Cold Mountain." It was pegged as a likely contender, although some have said it was almost too perfect.

15 minutes before the Oscar show airs here in Hawaii, it's all over.

"Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" won the Best Picture and Best Director award sweeping all categories the picture was nominated for bringing home 11 of the gold statues and tying the record with 11-award winners, "Titanic" (1997) and "Ben Hur" (1959).

This win for "Lord of the Rings" finally brings mainstream legitimacy to all of the many sci-fi/fantasy genre pictures that were nominated and lost to lesser movies. I am sure George Lucas and Steven Speilberg are very happy for director Peter Jackson who brought the Tolkein trilogy to the big screen in the last 3 years!
