Information gone wrong

I come home today after work and my answering machine has a message for me. The message says that I am entitled to test out the latest golf club technology.

One problem with this honor.

I don't play golf.

I have no idea why these people contacted me. I don't subscribe to any sporting magazines, well except the one for the model rocketry which is called oddly enough Sport Rocketry but typically the golfers and the model rocketeers are not lumped in the same group.

Then again launching model rockets from a golf course is not good idea.

Now how's that for mass telemarketing? I came home and found the same message on my machine. Unfortunately for them, I don't golf. Fortunately for me, I hit the delete button.

I lived in rented aparments for eons and it never failed to amuse me that that window, door, and exterior paint contractors were my most frequent telemarketers. I always had to point out that they were calling apartment buildings/renters so they must like wasting their time.

Robotic messengers are just wardialing everyone. Start at 521-0000, end at 521-9999. As soon as I hear the words, "Stand by for an important phone call," I hang up. But what about answering machines? Easy download this sound:

And record the "doo" part of it at the very beginning of your answering machine message. The telemarketing computers look for the familar "doo" of a disconnected, out of service line and erase these numbers from their master list.

i got that same message the other night and have gotten them before.

The worse part of it is the message is so darn long that it takes up most of the machine's tape that people who call after and try to leave a message can't.

I'm a big fan of the Star-Bulletin and even accept telemarketing as part of the survival strategy of any newspaper (as The Advertiser calls too, and even the Pacific Business News pitches me at work), but... I wish they'd hire slightly brighter telephone sales folks.

I got one today that didn't know quite what to do after I told her "no." (As in, my answer to "Do you currently get the Star-Bulletin?") Just some heavy breathing as she probably flipped through her handbook for what to do next. (Hint: "Would you like to?")

I was so put off, I hung up.
