Word Nerds

It is that time again. NaNoWriMo time. So, who's doing it this year?

After a couple of years of nagging eagerness to give it a try, I have finally decided to jump in. I consider myself a serious writer, you see (exactly the sort who the FAQ says should not participate), and I have, every year, said to myself, "That's really cool, but I'm a Serious Writer and I'll finish my novel my own way."

It appears "my own way" is to watch endless repeats of The Simpsons, neglect my housecleaning, think a lot about my novel-in-progress, and basically never get the thing done. It's not a very good way, but it's paid for.

So what the heck. I might as well write something, which is better than nothing. Of course Ryan is back in--he is, again, the Municipal Liaison in Hawaii and is hosting an off-site organization of writers.

And I am serious about this. I'm doing it.

Who else is in?

Woo! I can't wait to read, Mitchell.

Of course, now that I know you're in, I'm feeling especially insecure about trying this year - it'll be my third (I think) try, and will no doubt continue my fabulous losing streak.

Last year, my novel was totally outlined and plotted out, 26 chapters, give or take a few. Character profiles. A historic timeline. I still only got about 8,000 words into it. I'm thinking, this year, I'll channel Douglas Adams on crack and set out to write unintelligible garbage. That should at least get me to 12,000...

Douglas Adams on crack? If you're gonna abuse drugs, think Hunter Thompson! ;)

I'm going to try for it, don't know if I will make the 50,000 word mark this year.

T-minus 11 hours till the start! (At least for the Central time zone.)

I had done some prep work before JournalCon, but after JournalCon, all my creative juices got sapped. I'm going to give it a shot, though, but since I'm going to tackle a police procedural -- my first -- I'm fairly certain I'm going to choke.

Hopefully the Texas Book Festival next weekend will inspire me ...

I'm so way behind. No outline, no list of characters and it took me about 10-15 minutes just to type out the story's 2 or 3 line premise.

So far I just got 10 words which is just the title page (I think that counts too).

I found a good groove this morning, and cranked out 3453 words. Woo-hoo!

I'm trying to get done before Thanksgiving.

4088 more today. I'm rolling and having a really good time. How's it going for all of you?

A big, fat honking 0. Had to work this weekend, though, so I'm using that as a mitigating circumstance.

I did take a few notes on Saturday night, though ...
