HawaiiStories Hui 5.0b

Beta revision number used to indicate a get-together not as ambitious as the previous ones.

I'll be in Honolulu from Dec. 17-Dec. 25, and I'm wondering if anyone wants to do a HawaiiStories meeting sometime in between. (I have a wedding to attend on Dec. 20, so that date is out.)

The proximity to the holidays will probably make this gathering a long-shot, so instead of a picnic, how about something on a weeknight evening? By the way, the last one of these you all had was in June.

It was in June at Kailua Beach Park. I missed that one. Rather than a Hawaii Stories picnic, how about a Hawaii Stories Lunch or Dinner. RSVP?

Posted by Ryan on December 7, 2003 07:37 AM:

A HawaiiStories dinner? I'm up for that. Hey, it's the holidays. (Not likely the weather would cooperate for a picnic anyway!)

Hmm. Dec. 17-25? Yeah, that leaves only one weekend, and you're busy on Dec. 20. UH graduation is on Dec. 21, so I suspect the family and I will be busy as well. Yeah, I think we're looking at a weekday.

Thursday, Dec. 18 or Tuesday, Dec. 23? And where? An open, noisy, loiter-friendly place might work best for us, given the kid factor...

As for the where maybe Cuisine Tony.

Posted by Haken on December 7, 2003 02:31 PM:

Dinner would be cool, but with the kids, almost impossible for me to attend. Though, a lunch is a possibility. Ryan, maybe the hui can join us on one of our regular lunch outings. Maybe at one of the more upscale places we've been to--like Sam Choy BLC.

Other ideas:

Hawaii Stories Ice-Cream Night (Bubbies, Cold Stone, or that place at Westridge).

Hawaii Stories Dinner at:
Dave & Buster's
Bucca di Beppo
I like the Sam Choy's BLC idea
Wisteria

Hawaii Stories Coffee

Hawaii Stories Demonstration Against Whatever is Sticking in Your Craw

Hawaii Stories Movie and Ice Cream (see whatever's playing at the Vars and then head over to Bubbie's)

Hawaii Stories Pool-Shoot (University Cue or Brians)

Hawaii Stories Karaoke

Hawaii Stories Do-Your-Own-Thing Night (everyone do something different from 7 to 9, then meet online to chat about it from 9 to 11)

Hawaii Stories Rent-Mopeds-And-Drive-Around Night

Hawaii Stories Cruise-at-the-Blowhole-and-Count-Falling-Stars Night

Tuesday, Dec. 23 probably works better, since the wedding will have been finished.

I'm thinking sushi.

Posted by Ryan on December 8, 2003 08:22 AM:

I think Dec. 23 is as good a day as any. For the sake of quickness, let's pencil that in.

Sadly, Haken, I'm not free for lunch that day (it's one of our bank's many holiday luncheons!). That's not to say a random lunch with NemesisVex elsewhere during his visit won't work. But you sure you can't treat your family to an evening out? I plan to!

I loved Mitchell's ideas... ice cream in particular. But if you've got a hankering for sushi, then... where?

But if you've got a hankering for sushi, then... where?

That's where I must needs defer to you all -- my familiarity with Honolulu's sushi eateries is six years rusty, so I'm not sure what's still open, what's closed down, what was good that now sucks, and what sucked and is now good.

Most of the sushi places in Austin are upscale, so I (and my pocketbook) wouldn't mind something mom-and-pop.

Posted by Haken on December 8, 2003 11:47 AM:

Nope, Ryan, no nightime adventures with the family. In fact, no outings to where large numbers of people congregate. Due in part to fears of the possibility of the littlest one being infected by the myriad of influenza viruses that are making the rounds. That, and, of course, Aeryn destroying the restaurant while we're there.

Sushi - Tokkuri Tei (sp?). I think Sin mentioned this awhile back, and I must agree. It's in the same complex as Papa John's and Dave's Ice Cream on Kapahulu. Serious sushi in a casual environment. I think the prices are affordable.

Unfortunately, I have a commitment that night. But if you guys end up going to Bubbies *after* sushi, there's a possibility I could meet up with you there. I'll keep checking this page to see what's up.

Posted by mitchell on December 8, 2003 10:52 PM:

I don't know anything about it except what I've read in someone's journal, but that someone really seems to love Kuru Kuru for sushi.

Posted by Ryan on December 10, 2003 07:23 AM:

Kuru Kuru? Never been there. Found a Star-Bulletin review by Nadine Kam: four stars for value.

Here's Nadine's review of Tokkuri Tei on Kapahulu. She notes helpfully that - if Bubbies is too far - Dave's Ice Cream is right next door.

NemesisVex, sounds like we have two winners for Tuesday night. (But we should talk 'bout a lunch, too!) Pick one, and let's get some RSVPs here!

Posted by Beth on December 10, 2003 07:35 AM:

I'm definitely in for dinner on the 23rd.

And don't worry about infection from me...I got my flu shot! :)

Looking forward to seeing you Nemesis Vex!

Tokkuri Tei sounds more like the appealing choice. Strange as it may sound, I'd rather go to Kapahulu than to Pearl Kai. Last I remember of Pearl Kai, it had become a really skanky corner. Too, Kapahulu is close enough to both Kahala Mall and Waikiki to permit shopping for Japanese CDs at Tower and a Men of Hawaii calendar at ABC Store. Oh my twisted priorities.

Posted by Ryan on December 10, 2003 11:24 PM:

Tuesday at Tokkuri Tei. It's a date! For better or worse, count Jen and I in with two extra special (and extra small) guests.

Posted by Mitchell on December 12, 2003 12:25 AM:

count me in, too.

Posted by Jenn M. on December 15, 2003 10:23 PM:

I hope all of you can find parking! I like the food at Tokkuri Tei but they only have like 3 stalls or something. Otherwise, I'd go more often. Good luck and have fun!

Posted by Beth on December 16, 2003 07:56 AM:

I'll be there too. Not sure about Baz, but he's never missed a sushi date yet, so, I bet he'll make an appearance.

Posted by Ryan on December 19, 2003 03:17 PM:

Okay. Greg, Jen, me, and the kids, Beth, Mitchell... anyone else? And... what time? It being a workday, perhaps somewhere around 6:30 p.m.?

Posted by Ryan on December 22, 2003 07:31 AM:

It's tomorrow! A little bird told me Lisa should be able to make it as well. I think 6:30 p.m. is still a reasonable time to start chowing down.

Obviously parking is one challenge... getting there is another. 611 Kapahulu? I think that's further down toward Waikiki than I originally thought - below Date Street, opposite the golf course.

I'm tickled to see that a Google search for Tokkuri Tei already brings up this thread...

Posted by Ryan on December 22, 2003 07:34 AM:

Hmm. This review by our very own Keith advises, "Make reservations, or be prepared for a long wait for a table." Greg, you wanna ring 'em at 955-4226?

Posted by Beth on December 22, 2003 07:35 AM:

We're in for 6:30. See you there!

Posted by Jenn M. on December 22, 2003 01:46 PM:

Turns out I will be unable to attend my family get togethers this season, but I'm missing the gather and talk story feeling. I may be able to make this hui, if you don't mind me crashing it. Is it okay for me to pencil it in?

Posted by Ryan on December 23, 2003 07:15 AM:

The more the merrier, Jenn. I think Greg built a tiny buffer into our reservations - a Jenn-sized one, perhaps. If anyone else is eyeing the sushi, though, declare yourself now or forever hold your plate... on your lap!

BTW, the phone number I posted above was wrong. I think that's for their old location. The other number I found was 739-2800.

Posted by NemesisVex on December 23, 2003 07:49 AM:

I called half a dozen times, and I either got a busy signal or no answer. The restaurant opens at 5:30 p.m., so hopefully arriving at 6:30 p.m. is early enough.

Posted by Jenn M. on December 23, 2003 08:37 PM:

Ah! Closed for the week for Christmas!

Posted by Ryan on December 23, 2003 09:35 PM:

Yup! You could hear the phone inside ringing off the hook, too. Points off for not having a website... or even an answering machine.

Did you drive by, Jenn? If so, we're very bummed we missed you. We (being Greg, Beth, Baz, my family and I) hung out 'til 6:50 or so, then walked down to Irifune - my first time there, despite having lived here my whole life.

Posted by Jenn M. on December 24, 2003 07:16 AM:

Yes, I did drive by. My bf was going to drop me off but when he saw it was closed he didn't want to leave me hanging around in the dark. He is coming down with a cold so it wasn't an option to hang around to see if I could catch anyone else! (Grouchy, grouchy.) Sorry I missed you guys. I've only been to Irifune once, but I liked it. I hope you all had fun!
