HawaiiStories Hui V

Can it be? Has it been over a year before our last full-blown picnic? (Though we did have a small meetup in December.) Well, we've got to set things right! Our own Beth needs a proper sendoff, after all.

Let's get together on Saturday, July 31, say, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. What do you think?

The big questions are: Are you coming? Is mid-day okay? And yes, spouses and kids are more than welcome. Where? Magic Island? What are you bringing? Lest we end up with four tubs of Zippy's chilli and no drinks, let's put in our pot-luck plans here!

Can't wait to see y'all again. And with Jen eight months pregnant, this'll be just in the nick of time!

Well, there was that attempt to go eat sushi while I was in town last December ...

Posted by Ryan on July 8, 2004 2:59 PM:

Attempt? We did eat sushi! And I linked that post above, even.

Well, to start things off, I say, "I'm in!" And, hell, I'll claim the rice and bucket of chili (as well as the infamous HawaiiStories canopy tent). What are you bringing?

Posted by Jenn M. on July 8, 2004 8:41 PM:

I'll go, I'll go! I have to think about what to bring....how about potato mac salad?

Posted by Donna on July 8, 2004 9:11 PM:

So far nothing on the agenda for the 31st, so I am penciling in the picnic! This will be my first! :)

I'll bring a bucket of fried chicken...

Posted by helen on July 8, 2004 9:30 PM:

I'm going and I guess I will bring manapua.

Posted by Kainoa on July 10, 2004 9:09 AM:

sounds like it'll be LOTS of fun! i'll try and keep the rain in Hilo so you all can enjoy the sunny weather.

Posted by Beth on July 10, 2004 10:51 AM:

I'm there! I'll bring the Beckett. Oh, and something sweet. (Not that the Beckett isn't sweet. He certainly is!)

Posted by James on July 13, 2004 7:34 PM:

I missed the last one so I'll be there.

But what to bring.. My brother and maybe a Pupu platter from Zippy's, some Aloha Juice (Guava or Lilikoi.)

Posted by Haken on July 15, 2004 9:46 AM:

ack! I missed the last one and the one before that. I as gonna definately be at this one, but it's on the same day that I have camp. Gotta try and work it in.

Posted by Ryan on July 15, 2004 10:19 AM:

Rice and chili, chicken, manapua, mac salad, pupu platter, something sweet, juice... it's already building up to be the perfect traditional island pot luck!

Things are looking good! Beth, we're way overdue in meeting the Beckett, so I can't wait... and of course we're bringing our own box of
"sweets."

Haken, I hope you can make it... feel free to bring the family, as you can see these are always kid-friendly affairs!

Posted by R-Lan on July 15, 2004 11:46 AM:

I'll do what I usually do at g2gs... I'll just bring myself.

Nah nah, I keed I keed! I'll be bringing soda and since the juice seems to be coming, I'll switch it up a bit and bring some iced tea too.

But I don't have a c.o.o.ler*, so if someone could bring one, that'd be c.o.o.l*.

*Hey, I didn't know c.o.o.l. was questionable content. What gives?

Posted by Ryan on July 15, 2004 11:58 AM:

Glad you're going to be able to join us, R-Lan! As for "questionable content"?

As noted previously, there are a couple of odd words now flagged by the system used to keep "comment spam" off this site. The oddest words, and more than a few common words, are on the list (as, perhaps, they're used in the domain names of the more prolific spammers)... but right now, I figure writing around the filter now and then beats having to wake up with 1,539 spam comments to clear out.

Think of it as a way to expand your vocabulary!

Posted by R-Lan on July 16, 2004 11:18 AM:

Oh! I must have missed that day. Well... that's co... err, spiffy.

Posted by helen on July 25, 2004 12:07 AM:

It is less than a week away. Any idea on the head count?

Posted by Ryan on July 26, 2004 9:37 AM:

So far? I guess about ten people and a handful of kids. I'll send out an e-mail reminder!

We've got Jenn M. (potato mac salad), Donna (chicken), Helen (manapua), Beth and Beckett (something sweet in addition to Beckett), James and his brother (pupu platter, juice), Arlan (soda and iced tea), and of course us -- Ryan and Jen and family (chili and rice, tent).

Kainoa, thanks for being on WeatherWatch. We'll munch a manapua in your honor. Peter, sorry you can't make it this time... but it was good to see you in the parking lot of Costco!

I'll be on Maui visiting my newest nephew. He was born earlier this month and although I was there for his birth they grow up so damn fast in the first few months that I don't wanna miss the newborn baby smell :)

Have fun everyone!

Posted by Linkmeister on July 26, 2004 10:01 AM:

Regrettably, I have tree/landscape people coming the entire day, so I can't make it.

But hey, Ryan, "small furry mammals?" What about cockatiels? ;)

Posted by Donna on July 30, 2004 8:29 AM:

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make tomorrow's picnic! :( I am already late on a client's deadline, which means I'll be utilizing every free moment this weekend to get that done.

Sorry! So, the chicken is now up for grabs for anyone who wants to bring that.

I'll be looking for the pics and updates on the web! ;)

Posted by Mitchell on July 30, 2004 2:58 PM:

Let's move the picnic to Linkmeister's house. I want to see what Tree People look like!

Posted by Ryan on July 30, 2004 3:14 PM:

I'm sure Link will post photos. Does this mean that we can expect you, Mitchell "Mad Dog" Dwyer?

My cell phone number is 372-3372. Ring me if you get lost, or when you get to the park if you'd rather just play a fun game of cellular "Marco Polo" to find your way to the group!

Posted by R-Lan on July 30, 2004 9:11 PM:

Hi guys and gals, hate to do this, but I got last minute notice that my grandparents are coming to Hawaii, so I'll be spending the weekend with them.

Sorry for the last minute bail. I'll make it up, I promise!

Posted by Jenn M. on July 30, 2004 9:22 PM:

I just finished my salad and...I hope it's enough for everybody!

Posted by Ryan on July 31, 2004 8:46 AM:

My wife decided to go the extra mile, so instead of Zippy's chili, you're getting a home-made batch! Off to throw the canopy in the back of the van... sure hope there's enough room for the kids afterward!

Posted by lisa on July 31, 2004 9:31 AM:

Okay, looks like we can take over the chicken. Buk buk.

Posted by Mitchell on July 31, 2004 10:00 AM:

Okay. I was holding off on a commitment because, well, because I'm a guy and commitment frightens me.

No, not really. The friend who was having computer problems actually took my advice and asked someone smarter than me for help, so I'm off the hook (it turns out my advice was really good, because the smarter-than-me friend thought of a much better solution). Put me down for...hm. Something beefy or porky, I think. See you there.

Here are the photos for today's picnic.

Here are my photos from the gathering. It was so great to see everyone!

Posted by albert on August 1, 2004 1:23 PM:

Thanks for the photos, Helen and Ryan.

Sorry I couldn't be there, but .... oh well, you don't want to know the reasons.

But like they say, what goes down must go up ... eventually.
